i just watched the interview (channel 4 website, watch last nights show, go to section on icesave) John Snow was being pretty harsh wasn't he!?

Martin handled it well, although he did look gutted!!

There is no way anyone can possibly blame him, any more than they could blame any other form of media advice....

Was the icesave rate much higher than uk banks? even though protection was evidently much less?

if i had that kinda money to worry about i would certainly be doing my research... but then it seems nowhere is really that safe is it?

ho hum, well we still love ya martin and team!!! (well that's huggies for you innit!?)

Well said lunar, Martin is only giving us advice, he isnt a dictator. Ultimately its our decision to decide what to do with our own money. I always say I am my own financial advisor and therefore it is sultimately my decision and my fault if things go wrong.

Lunar, thanks for your eloquent post - I think you can tell from the number of thanks already that people agree with you!

I'm horrified that people should blame Martin for anything to do with the Icelandic banks. He's written very clear and thoughtful articles weighing the pros and cons, and shed light on the issues he faced in writing the articles themselves.

He, and the team he's assembled, is/are unquestionably one of the brightest lights on the internet and in the country - I think the good his work has done, in terms of education and empowerment of people like us is amazing.

Thanks here to Lunar, to the Forum Team, and to Martin.

  • Just a thanks from me too.

I don't often reply on threads like this because there are so many other people that contribute to make this site such a huge help for everyone, from others in the MSE Team and the forum team to our board guides, many of whom spend hours on this forum completely unpaid helping people find the info they're often desperately looking for in what are becoming stressful times and of course to everyone who posts on here providing such top deals and offers.

Your post's almost brought tears to my eyes though and I just wanted to say thanks, more than I could by just clicking the Thanks button.

Take care everyone and have a good day

    Andrea :)

I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for this site and all the people who contribute to it/work for it. I think it is truly amazing:

I'm personally very grateful to MSE-ers both paid and unpaid because I've noticed a lot of financial distress lately.

My husband and I have discussed this, and we believe that the reason we are not in such desperate straits as some people is down to advice and the lifestyle changes we have implemented since joining MSE.

A few examples from my relatively prosperous town in the south east:

The local "we buy your jewellery for cash" shop has a notice in the window saying that they are not buying at the moment...

A girl at work was in floods of tears over her finances he other day to the extent that she had to be sent home...

A man had a complete meltdown at the checkout in Coop last week when his card was declined and then five minutes later a young mum was in tears because she was about £2 short because she hadn't realised everything had gone up so much and she just didn't have it. The looks on the faces of the staff told me that this is par for the course at the moment...

The job centre is packed with new faces....

A "Buy Things on Tick at Exorbitant Interest" shop has just opened up in my town with cots and furniture in the window and is doing a roaring trade with pensioners and single mums who don't look beyond the "£3 a week!!!!!" signs

I've even seen Waitrose, Abel & Cole and M&S mums from school - in Aldi and Lidl!

Keep up the good work Martin and the team. We'd be much worse off without you.

    Love Jacks xxx :D

P.S. I *do* blame the arrogant big finance players though. They have leveraged all of our futures, gambled with peoples old age pensions, and quite possibly destroyed the world banking system - out of avarice, hubris and contempt for other people.

  • What I didn't include in my earlier post was my thanks to Martin, the forum team, and all the members, without all of whom I would long ago have been a complete basket case.

Now, I feel in control of my finances, my debts are going down, not up, and even though the company I work for is looking to get rid of around 28% of its UK workforce over the next couple of years - to be replaced with cheap offshore labour, we have no doubt - I'm nowhere near as scared as I would otherwise have been, if it wasn't for the all the people who contribute to this marvellous place.

So thank you to everyone, especially Martin for setting all of this up in the first place, and giving us advice, guidance, and most of all, hope for a future free of debt.
