Welcome to the MSE forums roycollingwood

It sounds like Virgin have barred the 0844 numbers you're using and, by stripping out the first 11 digits you dialled, are routing the calls via their own network.

They have 'previous' for doing that - see HERE - it's quite simply a way of maximising their profits which, frankly, is understandable as we head for recession.

Your only choice is to try the various other 0844 gateway providers in the MSE International CallChecker until you find one that Virgin haven't (yet) blocked.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Virgin Media are increasing the cost of calling some 0844 numbers from 1 Oct 2008.

Not only do VM rip you of for calls to International, mobiles, 0845 and 0870, they now are starting to increase the cost of 0844s and rip you off on them.

Surely they will just start to lose customers again for the phone line, like they did for several years in the past.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

0844 200 calls are classed as pg 22 charging band and should be charged at 7p connection and 1p a minute according to their current price plan.

Do you have a link to the new 0844 prices ?
  • My September bill has gone sky high on 0844 CallChecker numbers, I too assumed VM were blocking them and charging their own exhorbitant rates. However, maybe not, I queried this and got this reply:

Thanks for your email to Virgin Media team regarding the incorrect
charging for calls made to some Special Service numbers.

Please accept our apology for any inconvenience caused as there has been
an error in the application of call charges.

On 01 September, we have changed some of our Telephone rates.
Unfortunately, one of these rates has been implemented incorrectly. All
calls to numbers captured by chargeband PG22 (which includes 0844
numbers) have been priced at 10p per minute rather than the correct
price of 1p per minute. Kindly note that this is highly unusual, the
error has been recognised, corrected and we assure you that a credit
will be issued on your next bill.

I will believe this when I see a credit on my next bill, meanwhile I suggest everybody on VM check their current bill and challenge if you see the same 'error'.

Sorry, prices prices went up 1 Sept (there may be more for Oct).

If you go to the VM website and download the two lists.

Then check some of the 0844 access numbers from one of the alternative call carriers you'll see that VM charge more for some of there, for example ones that should be 1p/min are 2p/min, ones that should be 2p/min are 3p/min etc.

Interesting 'error' - even when they correct their accounting system 'error' they'll still be charging 100% over the top (BT charges ½p/minute for g22 rate 0844 numbers like 0844200xxxx, Virgin will then be charging 1p/minute).

  • Having major problem in getting a satisfactory response from VM. Basically telling me to shut up and pay up , as it is not their problem. 0844Calls confirm it should be .5ppm , as advertised , but VM charge what they like.

Anyone out there got the got the know how and motivation to create a VM users forum. Customer power cannot be ignored by these unscrupulous people.

Only BT are forced to allow access to such numbers. These prices would be agreed.

VM don't have to allow access to any number other than 999. They also can charge what they like to such numbers. Hence why for 6+ years they have been poor value and why for 6+ years people were dumping them in their thousands. (Only recently gaining a few customers).

This is why you see "Prices from a BT landline, other operators may be dearer and from mobiles considerably more". etc.

You vote with your feet - take your phone customer elsewhere.

I only had a VM line put in due to retention deal where I don't pay for it as such. When the then Telewest started putting their prices up 6+ years ago to become dearer than BT we switched to BT having been with cable from the beginning - when they used to be half the price of BT.

What 0844calls fail to say is that prices may vary from non-BT landlines,as you have now found out.

Where as some cheap call suppliers do eg: http://www.dialaround.co.uk

Your notice their is a warning about this on the http://callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/intcallchecker/
"Always double-check prices on providers websites before calling.Prices may vary from non-BT landline"

Also 0844calls still suggest you can make 0844 calls using your O2 inclusive minutes and this ceased yonks ago.;)
