    How does this work?

At Tesco you get 1 Clubcard point per £1 spent and at Sainsburys you get 2 Nectar Points per £1 spent. So if you fill up with x litres that won't necessarily make whole pounds. For instance if I fill up my car and the pump clicks at £55.95 then I always top up to £56.00 to get the extra Clubcard point. Even if the pump clicks off at a low pence figure I always shove extra in to get to the next £.

But if I'm using one of Tesco's periodic '5p per litre' off coupons then it makes more sense to round it up to the nearest litre:p

& if you combine it with an AMEX 5% cash back card (you can use AMEX at tescos, I think), you really can save soem money.

Be careful though, Tesco's have recently stopped accepting Library Cards as a method of paying for goods. I'm thinking of starting a thread on here about Tesco's Ripped Me Off, what do you all think ?

p.s. with petrol now being cheaper than diesel, how many people are putting a pint or two in each tank to save a bit ? Every little helps, you know !

I suggest filling up in 1978 to save even more.
(Finding unleaded might prove a tad tricky.)

But other than the known fact that a reduction in weight will result in saving a few pence, how do you save money by only buying the fuel you need for the week?

28 days fuel is 28 days fuel and I just don't see how buying 7 days fuel at a time saves money?

    Easy answer... Cashflow.

Driving around with too much petrol on board is the same as having a £20 or £50 note glued in your wallet. You can't spend the money elsewhere if you needed to.

noooooooo, you've glued your credit card to your underpants as a super safe MSE security method. You wash your pants every Thursday, so you won't be able to use your card until they have been washed, the glue has melted and your card can be put back into your wallet.

Also petrol can start to go 'stale' after 60 days, which in turn causes higher emissions, lower performance, and can damage your car. So if you don't use your car much your better off filling up smaller amounts.

    Is that right?

I know that diesel grows some sort of algae in it after a period of time.
I was not aware that petrol went stale

    Cheers Tinks,

Does that make them worse than the supermarket loyalty schemes? At Tesco it's 1 point per £1 of whatever fuel and at Shell it would be 1 point per £1.119 for petrol or £1.179 for diesel - assuming these prices for the fuels.

Well yes, BUT there are no Tesco or Sainsbury petrol stations near where I live, so it's better than nothing ;)
