webhosting/domain name packages

Options
I am hoping to start a small business venture and wanted to make a website. I know next to nothing about this but have been advised to go for a webhosting and domain name package. Any suggestions for good places to try?

I'd just like to say that I do not recommend BT as we have had various issues with them and their support is dreadful. You can get better service far cheaper.

you will find good and bad things about most hosts.

    have a look at 123-reg.co.uk
The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.

123-reg are fine for basic hosting and space, I've used them for many years without issue, as are 1&1, fasthosts etc etc. Although you will find people that don't like these and more! I'd personally steer clear of WebFusion (and brand owned by the same people as 123-reg), they are terrible.

For domain names I use http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ and they have been decent. For hosting I use http://www.clook.co.uk/ because they were cheaper and had more features than Webfusion, 123-reg's sister company.

To make the domain name and hosting work together is very straightforward. The hosting comany will give you two addresses that look like web addresses e.g. ns1.moneysavingexpert.com and ns2.moneysavingexpert.com. You input these into a form marked "name servers" where you registerd the domain, and that's what will 'glue' your domain name and the web space together.

A2B2 and YICHosting get my votes. Both got really good support. YIC are a bit more newbie friendly. A2B2 are more geared towards people who know their stuff, I feel.

QiQ are good but their control panel sucks and their prices could be better. I'm only with them because of an offer they did at Christmas. Not much use for hosting multiple domains, they start to get pretty expensive if you want that.

Hostfor99p have a lot of well-featured packages from 99p per day to 99p per month, and so far they're fast and reliable. I've been with them less than a month so I can't really say if it's like this all the time but I've read good things. If they're still this reliable and fast in a few months they'll be up there with A2B2 and YIC.

I probably would register the domain somewhere separate, estdomains, namecheap or godaddy depending on who's cheapest for the domain you want. Check out the renewal prices as well. It's a bit of a pain to change registrars (in fact for some of the more obscure TLDs it's nearly impossible without talking to the governing body - not good if that governing body happens to be Western Samoan) and it can help to think ahead. Perhaps one registrar is cheapest for first year registrations, but for a renewal the price can rise dramatically.

Easyspace have some good offers, and hosting from £1.25pm. Their support is good, they're based in Glasgow and reliability is excellent. I used to have several websites with them when I did it as a hobby, and never had a problem with them. Everything was easy to setup and manage on line.

    Try their Pic'n'Mix hosting!

The Pic 'n' Mix package lets customers customise their hosting solution to better match their requirements at the slide of a selection bar, by allowing them to choose the settings of five key components – disk space, bandwidth, mailboxes, operating system and payment plan.

I use facternet.com. Very reasonable for unlimited hosting. Give us a hint about what you're planning. You may need unlimited space/downloads, Databases, ecommerce, blog, forum etc. etc.

We can better advise you if we know (roughly) what you need it for.

There is no such thing as unlimited. There are packages advertised as unlimited, but the service will either be terribly oversubscribed or you'll get your account cancelled if you get anywhere near the usage of a similarly priced bargain basement metered package.

$5.95 a month for 2TB of drive space and 20TB of bandwidth isn't a workable proposition. The datacentre couldn't run packages like that, so someone reselling or colocating couldn't. It'd cost the datacentre more than that a week to power that machine, never mind hardware costs and data transfer. The biggest cost in hosting is power.
