Problem is that this requires Java which in itself beings a whole world of pain and insecurity on a Windows box these days. There is a very good reason java is banned from all public sector PCs these days.

    That's, quite frankly, rubbish.

Java is a programming language. The Java 'virtual machine' (needed to run programs written in Java) supplied with versions of Windows in the past was a bit flakey, but if you download the latest Java virtual machine (Java Runtime Environment) from Sun you'll have no problems.

Java programs are generally speaking a lot less prone to security vulnerabilities than older technologies, as the language was designed to prevent lots of problems that lead to common security exploits. (Like this, if you're that interested).

From a personal finance software point of view, I use Personal Accounts 5, which I believe has now been replaced with Personal Accountz, www.accountz.com, which looks very similar. If you understand the principles of double-entry accounting (or are happy to learn) you'll probably get on well with this package.

(I've just passed my first 'year end' using this package and produced with very little effort a personal Balance Sheet and 'Profit & Loss' statement... so I can see what I spent, what I earned, and by how much the latter was greater than the former.)

Well, forty quid for a package that deals with current accounts and budgeting only seems somewhat stiff compared to about fifteen for Money which does that and investments too!

When I bought it (Personal Accounts 5) it was about £20 I think. I've not tried the newer version.

I'm not sure what you mean by "deals with current accounts and budgeting". It is a full double-entry accounting system, you can set up accounts for whatever you like (current accounts, savings accounts, investments, fixed assets etc).

What does Money 'do' with regard to investments?
