When you come up against people with this sort of attitude time and time again, it gets very upsetting and it is very hard to keep up the polite front towards them.0 -
I apologise for any offence caused, no offence was intended and I'm sorry if any was taken.
I guess peoples attitudes of what is offensive differ, I have a son who is autistic as it happens, and an uncle who is downs syndrome so don't be to quick to judge.0 -
Dithering_Dad wrote: »I would have thought you'd know better, having an autistic son. They have a challenging enough life ahead of them without people pushing that sort of 'humour'.
I found that you being so over protective slightly offensive, some people use humour to help them get though situations. A family member has MS as regularly laughs and calls herself a cripped fool when she falls. She gets more upset at those family members who don't act the same with her as they did before she know about the MS.
Our family has a cruel sense of humour and she does not want to be left out of any "stick" as thats how we relate to each other.
Being too PC puts up barriers so people become unwilling to talk to someone incase of offending them. Try and use a little common sense and see the reason behind the humour, what is meant not what is said!
Most people with disabilities don't need abled bodied people to "protect" them they can do a good enough job themselves.0 -
Dithering_Dad wrote: »hmnnn, I see what you mean. A bit like calling a black person a n_____ or an asian person a p_____ - it's all just a joke, lighten up will you!
No thanks.
As far as I can see, the offending link was nothing like that. Your reaction is waaaay over the top. By all means criticise his posting it but resorting to calling the poster a 'piece of s**t' is extreme overreaction.--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -

I have used humour many times to get through. That, however, is within our family and when I know that it would be understood as such by those around me. That is a huge assumption to make on an internet forum full of people that you do not know. Most people with disabilities don't need abled bodied people to "protect" them they can do a good enough job themselves.
In this instance Treadmill linked to a picture of a disabled child alongside the word 'retard', most disabled children are not able to "protect" themselves and need others to stand up and shout for them.0 -
Dithering_Dad wrote: »So calling a Downs Syndrome boy a 'retard' is nothing like calling a black person a N_______?
Sorry, but in my world, both are words that are used to demean someone and are equally offensive. Racists are pieces of s**t and so are people who call Downs Syndrome children 'Retards' and mock their achievements.
And by the way, so are the apologists for these sorts of people.
I don't believe that the link in question actually labelled the boy a 'retard'. The word !!!!!! was used in a clear reference though.
According to the dictionary:
http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=!!!!!!
Noun
* S: (n) mentally !!!!!!, !!!!!!, developmentally challenged (people collectively who are mentally !!!!!!) "he started a school for the !!!!!!"
o direct hypernym / inherited hypernym / sister term
So although the term is these days treated as derogatory, it certainly appears to be a factual description.
The offensive thing to me is that the child in the image clearly has been exploited in the cause of raising a cheap laugh.
However, in this PC society most people complaining here seem to have been set off by the very use of the word '!!!!!!' which it appears is now politically incorrect to use. I have zero time for OTT political correctness in language so usage of the word doesn't really bother me at all.--

Dithering_Dad wrote: »So you're happy to use the word N____ in conversation? After all, this word was in common useage until the 60s and was a 'factual' word used to describe someone of African descent. Is this also a word that doesn't really bother you at all (what with your ZERO time for OTT political correctness in language)?.
As far as I'm aware, the word in question has been slang since day one and used primarily as a term of derision all that time too - so it's not really comparable to the word !!!!!! which is a factual word used to describe someone who is developmentally challenged.
The fact that politcal correctness causes some people to leap around like they've got a hot poker up their behind every time they hear the very word '!!!!!!' mentioned today is a pretty sad state of affairs IMO.
As I said the real issue that I have here is that a specific person has been held up to ridicule in the cause of making a joke. That's not acceptable. I'd have the same issue with a picture of some unfortunate person being spread around in conjunction with a joke about being ugly, but no issue with the use of the word ugly to describe them. The image was actually taken to represent the child's personal triumph over adversity. The 'exploitation' came in when some idiot added the 'retard' text under it and changed the photo's meaning entirely. Do you see how this works yet? The very word that 'doesn't bother you at all' is actually the word that raised the 'cheap laugh' that you insist you found offensive. You can't have it both ways I'm afraid.
Well bully for his 'triumph over adversity'.
I'd personally be more inclined to say well done to the kid for winning a race rather than come up with flowery BS about 'triumphing over adversity' - but shouldn't you be complaining about that too because the creeping mess of PC-ness has lead to races being taboo for kids these days?--

Dithering_Dad wrote: »p.s. interesting emphasis on I and me in your treatise, it's almost as though you regard yourself as so important on MSE that your views are 'the last word' on this/any other subject. This form of narcissism is very prevalent on internet forums where many people on the fringe of society are able to express viewpoints which they would not be able to do via any other medium. For instance, I really could not imagine you standing at a lectern at a medical conference on genetic abnormalities that affect cognitive function and arguing that the word retard is not a derogatory term and therefore should return to common useage.
You would not do it there, nor I suspect on any public street corner. You would however be happy to express these views on an anonymous forum or down the pub with your cronies. Rather than being an 'important person' with 'incisive opinions', you're actually a rather sad little coward.
However, those are just my views, though views that I would be happy to repeat in any forum, internet, pub, street corner or conference.
Just saw this bit that you added in later.

This is the attitude that I am unkeen on, most disabled people can look after themselves and can live so called normal lives. They don't need anyone to protect them, or talk out for them.0
