Sony PSP from Asia

Options
Hi
Just thought I'd let you know about the Sony PSP. As you might know it's not available in Europe until 1st September. But you can order it from the US or Asia right now. There are 2 types available, the US and Japanese version. I've gone for the Japanese version as there's a firmware update available for that model which allows you to browse the internet through wifi and gives a lot more functionality.
After much research I found a few sites, so here's what I found (the prices given are for the value pack)

https://www.yesasia.com - £160 - free shipping
https://www.gadget-asia.com - £175.95 - £20.95 shipping
https://www.lik-sang.com - £160 - free shipping

I think they all claim that they'll refund you the VAT if you're charged, though it seems that most are shipping from UK addresses so you shouldn't get stung. They all state that delivery will be in up to 4 days too.

I just ordered through yesasia.com as they seem to be a reputable company. Use code YesAsiaTalk20 for $5 off. One thing though, they needed a picture of my credit card to verify the card. Seemed strange to me but it seemed that a lot of people had gone through the process with no problems - I shall wait and see.

Anyway, hope this was of some interest!

At yesasia.com you can ask for an English manual and plug. Yesasia's policy for exchanging your PSP cause of dead pixels is that it must have 5 pixels or more. Can find out about warranty.

Have you taken IMPORT DUTY into consideration?

Import Duty from Hong Kong is 2% on the total inc P&P and if it's being shipped via UPS etc.. they charge and admin fee for paying this Import Duty of about £10. Then on top of this you have UK VAT.

    £160 for PSP
    £3.20 Import Duty
    £10 UPS Surcharge
    £30.31 VAT

Total: £203.51 - This is what someone on another forum was charged for his from likesang.

http://gbax.com are suppose to ship form UK so may be worth checking.

This is what I found on the yesasia.com site:

"As a token of appreciation, YesAsia.com will now pay the VAT (Value Added Tax) and custom duties for orders shipped to the United Kingdom by Standard Shipping method. In other words, customers choosing the Standard Shipping method for their orders to UK can enjoy VAT-FREE offer at YesAsia.com."

Do I have to pay taxes on product(s) ordered?

We do not charge any sales tax. However, any custom fees or import sales tax levied on international deliveries are the responsibility of the customers.

Well fingers crossed it all goes well for me as it's a b'day prezzie. I'll let you know what happens.

Really wasn't keen on waiting for the UK release as firstly needed it in August, and secondly really wanted the Japanese version rather than the US version.

That will be for any other country. Yes-asia is definately customs/vat etc free to the UK.

As far as i was aware, lik-sang ship from hong kong via a courier with full value stated so you will get customs charges.

I bought the US version PSP on holiday in Florida last month. The refurbished model is $199 at EB Games otherwise $249 at Wal-Mart for a new one - along with a few games and movies for the long flight home.

Upgraded the firmware yesterday to version 2.0 from the Sony Japan web site and it works perfectly - wireless Internet access and all. So I don't see any reason for buying the Japanese version unless you're going to be playing a lot of movies as they are region locked but the games are region free. I think Japan and UK are both region 2.

The english manual is available as an Adobe Acrobat download from several sites, just do a quick search on Google or try this one -

Whilts updating the firmware is percieved to be a good thing - alot of stuff you can do with the PSP requires you to have firmware version 1.50. If that does not bother you, then I would wait for the UK launch - wait till after xmas, and get one for what I reckon will be 100 of your english pounds.
