Rikki, is your laptop wireless ready? i.e. have you put your wireless card in?
Click [ Start --> Connect to --> Wireless network connection --> View wireless networks ] Then click refresh network list -- can you see the name of your router in the list?
For the security settings type 192.168.2.1 into your browser.
- change the channel number
- create a 128bit WEP security setting or WPA.
Once your set up with your lappy and pc go back into settings and click not to broadcast your SSID0 -
I have the Belkin router on my main pc and I bought a wireless network card for my daughter’s computer.
Once I installed the network card? It picked up the signal from the router.
Now my daughter has the internet and can leave my pc alone?
You may have to buy a network card for your laptop so it can pick up the router signal.
If it is wireless? then do what the post above suggests :-)I'm not poor i'm just skint0 -

Rikki it is very difficult to talk you through this in a forum situation. A few things you could do/try:
-search this forum for 'wireless' and specify 'Techie stuff' - in the time i've been reading this forum i have seen quite a few number of questions and queries relating to wireless home networks. Just for a general read maybe come across a few helpful points.
-also you could try calling Belkin. I have found their customer service to be helpful, and as you say your a 'newbie' to networking then they should have the answers for you.
Once you have your connection figured out and up and running then you can make it secure. People on this forum including me will be able to talk you through that, no probs. It only takes a few clicks and a few mins. Once you have your wireless network connected dont stress too much about being temporarily unsecured- If someone really wants to get into a network they will, be it secured or unsecured.0 -
Modern routers often have a web page style of interface which you use for changing settings. I do not know what model you have but try this:
Connect a pc to the router.
Open Internet Explorer.
In the address bar type 192.168.2.1
This may bring up the web page which allows you to configure it.
Post back with results and details of router.0 -
My computer has IP number 192.168.2.1 and my slave computer has 192.168.2.2
You need to make sure the second computer has a different number or they will conflict.
Then they should work together and be able to see each other, for file sharing you need to use the network connection wizard on both computers.
Also go to start, type in run command and type ping then input your ip number? It should come back with ping times and stuff like that, then ping the second number of your slave computer and it should do the same.
Then you will know both computers are working and should be talking to each other.
I'm a newbie myself and have learned mostly by myself, its hard but when you work out problems it feels good.
Just wish i could work the wife out nowI'm not poor i'm just skint0 -
Firewalls will also block access.. if you're running one, make sure you tell it the other computers IP address.

Hello again still trying.
The main computer is connected via the broadband mouse. The main computer contains its own wireless card. I have set this up per instructions. It is now functioning in station mode (as a client). The main computer in turn can detect the laptop. The laptop has a wireless card installed in it. I have activated the card. It is working and can pick up the signal from the main computer.
The main computer is using speed touch connection.
I need to change the laptop to use a wireless conection. This I don't know how to change?
I must program the laptop to look for the wireless connection and not speedtouch connection. I don't know how?£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........
