After hours of messing around, technophobe me managed to get my Belkin wireless router set up and running on my Telewest Broadband internet. How do I protect my router from anybody around who wants to use it?
If anybody is kind enough to reply.... can you explain how to do this in simple terms

Belkin Router is pretty east to do...
Once you have logged in, on the left hand menu choose sub heading Security (under the heading Wireless)
Once the window opens where ist says Security Mode: chose either WPA or WEP....
If you use WPA chose a paraphrase (type anything you want) and then click on apply changes. you can then log out of the router.
On the wireless computer you are wanting to connect to the router with when it identifies the connecting it will give you the opportunity to put in the password (paraphrase) you set on the router.
WEP is a similar set up except you usually need to enter the long code and not the paraphrase.
Belkin do an online guide which can be found here http://setup.belkin.com/guide.htmlWelcome, rogerramjet.

Thanks Roger.... where do you mean log into???? I don't have to log in to get on my broadband. Had a look at the guide and couldn't find anything you were explaining to me.0

Log into the router m8
It should be a web address but with numbers, looks like "192.168.1.1". You just put whatever number is in the instruction book into your web browser.
Once you get the right number you should have to put in a username and pass word. again these will be in the instructions.
Goto the security option and choose WPA encription(*WEP can be broken in about 4 minuites if the crackers know what they're doing-so choose WPA over WEP!*) enter any passphrase and choose save or finish.
Thats it
Once you try and connect again it should say secure network on your wireless conection. Click it and it'll ask for the passphrase. Type it in and thats you.0 -
default for belkin is 192.168.2.2
You need to open a web browser window and then type 192.168.2.2 into the address window and click go.
Its also worth setting a password to access the router so no-one else can go and change settings and even lock you out of it (you'd need to do a factory reset to enable access)
I've seen a good few unsecure wireless networks which have unsecure routers...which is scary.Welcome, rogerramjet.

Thanks Roger - am also new to this game! I've read about changing the username on your SSID (I think) as well - this in addition to the above advice? Just how easy would it be for someone to access your network after you've done all your suggested name changes?0 -

There are ways to break through the encryption on a wireless network, the person wouldn't need to access the modem/router to it. The thing is its not as easy to to do as people are led to believe, so I wouldn't worry to much about it occurring.
As an additional measure you could set the router to only allow a certain amount of connections (the amount of computers in your home for example) or even use the Firewall > MAC Address Filtering section.Welcome, rogerramjet.

catsilversword,
Please read this thread for more advice on what you need to do..
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=118002
The 2 most important things would be to enable WPA-PSK encryption with a STRONG ( see https://www.grc.com/passwords ) 63 character key, and to disable SSID broadcasting.. The other steps mentioned are also useful additional security, but I would do these 2 as an absolute minimum..
No encryption, and your neighbours can see everything you are doing if they download the hacking tools from the web. No disable SSID broadcasting, and everytime you switch the router on, Windows will kindly invite your neighbours to connect to it..
Cracking WEP encryption is achieved by sniffing the data passing through the airwaves, collecting loads of packets, and running software which exploits the weakness of the WEP encryption method. WPA is more secure, but only if you use a strong 63 byte random key.. Using the dogs name is not a good idea, unless his/her name is

Ok - have got the principles down - anything to beware of with the following router:
D-Link DSL-G604T
The admin setup commands appear to be different from those above but I guess I can work through the options - just looking for a quicker route
Cheers for all the help
