Hi all ADSL on today and got it all set up fine and working well.
I want to set the security, what should I setup WEP (128) or WAP.
I set it up with WEP (128) but have a felling its slowed down the surfing?
Also with the router wired it saus connected at 100mbps but with wireless its 54mbps and does not appear as fast, is this normal?
Not sure how to check the speed my new line should be 2MB.
Many thanks for any advice Tony

Tony,
For settign security use WPA as WEP is inherently insecure.
There will be a slight overhead with security but its shouldnt matter too much.
The wired connection for your local area network will be 100 mbps and 54 for wireless. This is normal unless your wireless netowrk card is on of the netgear ones that supports their enhanced mode.
There are a number of speedcheckers onlien available https://www.adslguide.org has one as does zdnet.co.uk
The netgear router shoudl be able to auto sense your speed and will show up in one of the menus on the router admin

Thanks for your help frak, is the wireless slowing my connection down if its only 54 or is this still plenty for a 2mb connection?.0

Tony,
Hopefully I'm not teacing you to suck eggs but it can get confusing if you get your 'bits' and 'bytes' mixed up. A byte (abbr. 'B') is 8 bits (abbr. 'b')
Your router when wired is fast ethernet which is up to 100 mbps (mega bits per second). Your wireless is 54 mbps, just over half the speed of the wired fast ethernet.
Your broadband internet connection is 2 mbps (again mega bits) per second.
So in either case your LAN connections will be up to 50 times or 27 times faster than your internet connection. In other words the speed of your external internet will always be the bottleneck.
btw - if you have WAP available, use it.

The wireless can run up to 54Mbps. Your broadband can run to 2Mbps. The speed of the wireless will make no difference at all to your internet. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Did you know....
You lose 50% of your wireless bandwidth due to "ACK" packets (acknowledgement packets) .Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

also I set a WPA but had a choice of TKIP, WEP and AES
I left it as default TKIP and all seams ok but is this right? Thnaks Guys.
Can I also ask abot my printer, I have used bluetooth before for both dial up and printing to make everything wireless, can I add my printer to my new wireless network it only has USB or normal printer port can an adaptor be be bought to add a printer to the wireless network?
Thanks tony.0 -
If you've got the DG834GT then shouldn't you be running at 108Mbps and not 54Mbps? I think the security settings are better on this one too!"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Hi, yes I do have this router, I'm using the internal mini pci card on the laptop (intel).
Thanks Tony.0
