I'd give Linksys a wide birth. I've had nothing but trouble with mine - wish I'd done the internet research before I bought it. My Sis has netgear, no complaints there.

You're going to get a mixed bag of responses!

I chose the Netgear DG834GT because of the 'Super G' feature which promised transfer speeds of up to 108mbps. I'm happy with it. Works very well with the WG511T PCMCIA wireless adapter, less well with the WG111T USB adapter. The system was originally developed with the PCMCIA card adapter and simply works better with it in my opinion! (The USB adapters were a late addition).

I've got 1 PC card (Sony Vaio laptop) and 3 USB adapters (Dell laptop, Dell PC and Toshiba laptop) on my network. Only the machine on the PC card adapter achieves the 108mbps speed. The others only achieve 54mbps (but this is not noticeable functionally!).

i started iwth a belkin, no end of problems, got it exchanged/upgraded then refunded and bought a netgear (whose price had come down since) for less than i originally paid.

not had any problems since installing it.....

What about D-Link? You could download their manuals from their site, which are very good with plenty of screenshots etc, before making any purchase.

  • Hi

I bought a Linksys WRT54G Router to go with my DLink ADSL modem about 6 months ago. I have nothing but trouble with it.

The wireless connection between my PC and the Router is always excellent, but the router keeps disconnecting the internet when using the wireless, strangely it is good when used wired.

I bought my mum a Linksys WAG354g (combined modem and router) and this has been a piece of cake to setup and has caused no problems at all.

Yesterday I was given a Netgear DG834GT which I intended to install at a relatives house today. I tried it on my ADSL line last night and it wouldn't pick up the connection, having searched the internet it appears many others have the same problem.

I tried it again this morning and it worked. Took it to my relatives and it was installed in less than 5 minutes and has been rock solid all day.

It really does appear to be a lottery, however I have found the self-help forums on the netgear website a very friendly and helpful place to visit, it may be worth asking for some advice on what to buy, they seem a pretty honest bunch.

    Hope this helps
