If £ is the issue, lidl etc do very cheap wine that would do the job.
Otherwise maybe gravy or stock? Extra tomato sauce? Or even just water if it's a dish that already has plenty of flavours?0 -
I guess money is part of the issue, it's just that I'm not a big fan of the stuff and im not totally comfortable of putting it in dishes that the kids eat.0

Hi,
if you want to avoid the alcohol and need a liquid use vegetable broth or vegetable cooking water. If you need it acid add a little lemon juice.0 -
My Mum has an allergy to wine which is a shame as I used to use it in bolognaise. I now use a good glug of balsamic vinegar and worcestershire sauce instead. It works.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J0

I thought I'd point out that when you cook with wine, the alcohol is burned off leaving merely flavour. In general, its best not to cook with wine that you wouldn't drink - it'll just give the food an unpleasant flavour. The same goes with using vinegar instead of wine - an absolute no-no unless you're making saurkraut! You can try to introduce flavour by cooking things down until they're thicker on a slow to medium heat. This will give you a richer thicker tomato sauce, for example. You could also try adding stock cubes. I use vegetable bullion, which is like a stock cube, but liquid. A teaspoon of this in the cooking adds a great deal of flavour!BCSC Member 70:j

Cranberry juice makes a really nice alcohol free alternative to red wine in cooking, it's not too tart and adds both flavour and colour.0
