Help Washing Machine Repair this afternoon

Hi all hope you can help.
My washing machine is not very well, the drum will not turn at all when it is on. It is not stuck or anything as I can turn it by hand. It is pumping the water in and out fine so that is OK. We are not very techie so I have called in the Hotpoint engineer this afternoon. The machine is 12 years old and we have never had a problem with it so just wondering how much it is worth spending on it.
Any tips and hints and I have never really dealt with things like this.
I fell quite intimidated by tradesmen makes me feel like a dumb blond (I am blond by the way).

Could be a broken drive belt - I just got one for our tumble dryer for about £12 but it was fairly tricky to fit, though I guess a pro would be able to do it in 20 minutes or so, so you may be looking at minimum call out charge plus cost of part

12 years for a washing machine is very good going! MY sister has the same problem with hers now, she has had hers for 10 years but it was second-hand when she got it, so maybe it has just passed its life expectancy? DH is going to try and fix it for her (she is a single mum) by replaing the belt. My first washing lasted 5 years, second 3 and the current one is less than a year old.0

Wow so I must have done well then, mind you we are only 2 in the house no kids so perhaps less use then.Save £12k in 25 No 49

A friend of mine's Hotpoint washing machine went wrong after 9 years. They spent £170 on getting it fixed by Hotpoint. I'd get a new one if I were you, it'll be that much more efficient, should go on a few years without anything needing to be fixed. You can get a nice Zanussi 1600rpm, AA, nice big drum for £270ish, I did. Up to you. We spent £90 getting our fridge fixed with them after a year of having it - that included the call out charge, and they would replace anything on it, so parts and labour that was agreed before they came out.. It was an extra £30 for a years extended guarantee which we took coz with a bubba on the way, I don't want to have to go through not having a fridge again like I did in the height of summer, and moving this year.0 -
I just recently bought a Bosch Classixx (the cheapest one) at £279. Recommended by the washing machine repair man who came out to fix my AEG which was only about 4 yrs old that needed £160 spent on it. Obviously it seemed silly to pay that and then have other things go wrong so bit the bullet instead. The Bosch comes with a 2 yr guarantee as standard with the option to pay extra for another 3.0

I had a Bosch Classixx in my last house, a mid range one. I had problems with it soon from the start where it made a loud noise when taking in water, must have been the pump or something. Anyway, my ex had to have it replaced I heard after a few months of us having it, during which time I left him. My Zanussi has a 2yr guarantee.0 -
hi tall girl,
i had same problem this week, my hotpoint aquarius 13 yrs old and I love it, it would not turn but like yours would fill, it was only the brushes that had gone and its done and sorted not too expensive at all, hope yours is same problem.0 -
sorry i am bit late with my reply, he has probably been and gone now, what was the problem?0

Hi beanieandme
Funny you should say that because there was a discussion recently about just that - noisy when taking in water. It seemed it was 'normal' for the Bosch although I might give them a call to ask about it. Was that the reason your ex had it replaced or did it actually go wrong?
