Have been reading through the Wireless threads and nothing really seems to answer my questions, so here goes!!
Have a one year old Dell 8400 and now have HP laptop, this is wireless ready.
I want to use the laptop around the house, so main PC will be wired. Do I
Buy a decent router, such as those mentioned in the many threads.
Or as a generally happy Wanadoo customer whose 12 months is just about up, go for their Livebox option. Must be prime time to get a deal, such as upgraded to 2meg, waived £20 upgrade charge etc etc. Surely if I'm going to be paying £15 or so for the next year anyway with any ISP, is it worth spending £60 on a router? when I could get wireless for next to nothing
Comments appreciated.....

Personally I would buy some hardware of your own, to suit your needs.
The Wannadoo box is locked so that it will only connect to Wanadoo and also it won't work with your HP laptop using the built-in WiFi, as you have to use their WiFi USB dongle, which rather defeats the object of built-in WiFi somewhat!
You don't need to spend £60, £35 - £45 is nearer the mark if you shop around like a true Money Saver!

Thats incorrect. You can use third party wireless adaptors or devices with the Livebox. See this thread on another forum or go to the Wanadoo help page search and type in:
How many computers can I connect to the Livebox?
The bottom of the resulting page has information on how to configure your laptop or other devices when not using the supplied Inventel adaptor. He huihuinga taangata he pukenga whakaaro – A meeting of people; a wellspring of ideas (Maori proverb)0 -
Dont get the wanadoo box, its awful. If u wanna splash out get a Netgear Wireless router, much better brand, market leader in my eyes0

The Wanadoo Livebox is perfectly functional, does what it says on the tin, its FREE and if it goes wrong they send you another one as its not actually yours, its only lent to you. I can't see how that makes it 'awful'. I'm not even a Wanadoo customer but I had to set it up for some friends and it certainly does the job. Admittedly i'd prefer my Linksys wireless router any day but that still doesn't make the Livebox awful.

Check the sticky threads, this is a common question on this board.
There is no 1 answer.., it's all down to personal preference
Use the search function at the top of the page, search for ISP broadband router etc..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

You say that the Livebox is perfectly functional but it relies on only a 26 character WEP encryption key, which can easily be cracked in hours. This not very secure when compared to modern WPA encryption, used in most other present day equipment!
You say the the Livebox is FREE but it is not FREE, as you have to pay a never ending additional £4 per month subscription for their Wireless & Walk service.
A Livebox costs £80 to buy, see this link
The Livebox is locked so that it can only be used with Wanadoo as your ISP.
It may be possible to use the Livebox with adaptors other than their own, but the official line from their support team, is that you NEED to buy additional USB dongles for £45, see this link
It's not technical snobbery, the Livebox a pile of Cr*p in comparison to other wireless routers costing half the price available today!
