laying a new lawn (merged threads)
Options
last year i had a landscape gardener do some work in my garden. the final thing he did was to lay a new lawn for me. this he did on december 2nd, at present it still looks a bit patchy and today i noticed the top of the grass is yellow and dare i say dying. no one has been on the grass since, i have it blocked off from kids and dog, i have yet to cut it, i dont think it is long enough yet, but i am getting a bit worried.
so, the questions are, is there a good and bad time or even a no no time to lay a new lawn. are the yellow bits on top of the grass sign of it dying, is there any way to bring it back if it is dying, the bottom bits of the grass are still a nice green, should i cut it now to get rid of the yellow bits or should i just call the gardener and get him back in. i dont want to start arguing with him, if it is something i have done or even not done.
i would be gratefull of any advice.
regards chris

I'm sure he will tell you it will be fine in a month or 2. Grass is really tuff but you can get some diseases that cause yellow circles, fairy rings I think they are called. It's a fungal thing. It may be worth forking the grass. Go deep and wiggle the fork about before removing it.0

Hi
The ideal time to Turf is preferably during good growing conditions ie Autumn/Spring.
Avoid laying one in summer as moisture needs to be available for the turf to "Root" so without Irrigation facilities it`s a bit tricky.
Don`t worry about "Yellowing" it`ll probably be a little Freeze stress from the recent cold Frosty weather.
Generaly grass plants need temperatures beetween 15-25c to Be activly growing so temps of Freezing (Which has been common of late) will Put stress on the plant ie Freeze stress.
Once temperatures and light levels increase the plant will produce more Chlorophyll which`ll Improve colour.
Thanks
PS....Start to mow now things are moving a bit.0 -
I hope that it has had a good soaking over a month or so.
To aid growth in areas where it's not very healthy get some polythene and stake it in place over the bad bits.
This'll keep oisture in, keep it warm and protected and act like a mini greenhouse thereby incouraging growth.
Almost impossible to kill grass but the yellowing could also be produced by something that is in the soil, I.E Oil, Chemicals Etc.
ONLY cut the grass when it is definitely growing and make sure mower is on high setting and is SHARP!!"Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -
Agree with previous posts.
Normally it would be a bit late to be laying turf in december as the cold will not allow the roots to grow and become established.
I think this last year was a mild winter by comparisons.
Grass is very tough and will recover in time. Be patient and wait for growth before mowing I would suggest. And don't put chemicals on it in the first year.

I like the original poster had my lawn laided late last year, november..Only now i have also had concerns as a few little yellow patches have appeared. I have put these down to the bloody foxes, just seen they have been trying to dig!!!!
Anyone know what i can do too deter them ??0 -
Hi
Not a lot you can do TBH !
I`m a professional Greenkeeper/Groundsman and i have done a 5 year Turf science course so if any of you guys want advice on anything post back !
Foxes
Unfortunatly Pests aren`t easy to deal with ie foxes,Rabbits ect
Some greenkeepers Will either Shoot,Trap ect however you need a licence and is rather cruel.
However pests hate smells !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The stench will deter them and make them wonder elsewhere in search of food.
Use Hydregenated cod liver oil or even Hair cuttings from the barbers
Garlic is also commonly used Nowadays
The patches of yelowing could be Fox urine,If so water down to dillute.

I dont know how difficult it would be
Would the fox be detered by getting wetI dont know
, at least the lawn would get a soaking and dilute the fox p .
