I'm thinking of making a £3.99 sweetie bet - will it work?

Options
I have seen huge 1.5 kilo tins of Roses in the supermarket, they are priced at £3.99 which is half price.

They are all dated 11/6 but I'd like to buy one to put away till next Christmas. I know that they won't be eaten because I'll put them in a cupboard at the back of the garage, this is also the coolest place that I can think of for the summer too. I see it as a £3.99 bet, they will be officially out of date but what do you think? will it work? has anyone done this before?

Is it a use by date or best before? i find most sweet foods have a best before date, it just means that they might not be as good after that date, but i think chocolate is lovely, however old it is!!!!

Working in a supermarket, I have eaten lots of out of date chocolate that gets reduced up in the canteen. Most of it has tasted ok. Others had turned white and looked nasty, but still tasted ok. If you are just going to inflict the chocolate on your family I would say go for it. If it is for a party I wouldn't like to guess...

It won't kill you eating a month out of date chocolate, the date is only a guideline.

My eldest daughter stores chocolate year in year out (unlike her mum :) ) and all that ever seems to happen is the fat seperates off a little giving a white look in places. I can tell you from expirience that the choccy still tastes delicious!!!

My mother eats chocolate donkeys years old. I mean 2 and 3 years out of date. She is still living. My Auntie gets it for her from some market or other although when the kids were little i had to vet the chocolate she gave them cause i thought it was ok feeding herself with it but i wasnt going to let her feed my kids with it. As the kids got older they learned to look for the sell/use by date, and if it was out of date, they left it. Mom thought my kids werent very keen on chocolate - i hadnt got the bottle to tell her they love chocolate but only chocolate didnt fancy the chances of being poisoned.

  • Well - I did it, I bought the tin of Roses.

What I'll do is take a look at them a couple of weeks before Christmas, do a little discrete tasting and if they still taste fine and look OK (I think that chocolate that has started to go white is off putting) then I'll put them out and no-one will know that they were half price a year earlier. If they are starting to spoil I'll have to think of other uses for them, so I'll be back asking for tips then.

I have had some slightly out of date quality street chocs (rescued from a friend who was throwing them away!)and the chocolate was fine but some of the soft centres has hardened up a bit. Other than that quite edible! Think I might try to get a tin myself.

I believe that if chocolate is stored in a cool place, is should last for a long time. If I was in your position, I'd think it was my duty to protect my guests by tasting one sample of each type of chocolate in the tin.

From experience I've found that chocolates containing nuts don't age very well so you might want to remove those before offering them to your guests.;)

If you're looking for volunteer chocolate tasters, me and Judi will be first in line.:D

By the way, tins rust in cold and damp environments so if you're planning to store it in a garage...............put in into a sealed plastic bag first.

The only reason chocolate goes white & funny-tasting is if it gets warmed up & then sets hard again. It has nothing to do with the date. It's something to do with the crystals in the cocoa butter, DS & I once did a science experiment about it, which involved a lot of chocolate tasting, and melting & re-setting chocolate, then tasting it again (all in the cause of science, of course!)

Am I naturally cynical, but I suspect that the date of 11/06 is probably designed more to protect the sellers from people doing what you are doing, than to protect consumers from any problems with the chocolate!!!
I have heard that chocolate left from the 1st world war has been tested & would still be ok. Not sure I would volunteer to try it, though!
