Most tax offices have 8-10 weeks post on hand, so it will be a while yet.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

I highly recommend using online Self Assessment where possible, this take about two weeks.0

I'm guessing the OP is talking about a PAYE rebate, so SA online would not apply in this case. Also I would never suggest to a person to use SA when there is no need to do so.0 -

The SA online covers all income, including from employment. If it were not appropriate then I think it would not be there.
It takes a week to get a PIN code for the SA online system and then a refund takes a couple of weeks after doing the form. Seems infinitely more sensible that chasing around after tax offices trying to find the right person to speak to.
I don't understand your reservations.0 -
You can use SA if you want to but once you get in the system you have to keep doing them or take action to come out of SA. It requires some extra work to get all the info together and fill it in.
If you have a simple PAYE refund it's easier just to do a letter or phone.
If you are used to doing the SA form and you are happy to do it fine but there is more work involved, I wouldn't recommend it myself even if it does save 2 weeks processing time.0 -
Well at risk of labouring the point, but if you only have income from earnings then you would need exactly the same information for a letter that you would for the SA online. And if you have multi sources of income then you are probbaly doing the SA anyway.
And it is incredibly simple to fill in the details on-line, mine could not have taken me more than five minutes to do it the first time I tried. Plus it does all the calculations instantly. It is a real shame that more people don't try it out.
And on the other hand I do know many people who have spent months upon months chasing up with letters and phone calls. It once took my husband two years to get some tax refunded after being pushed around from pillar to post.
It is not true that once you have done a SA you have to do them for ever.0 -
It's probably pretty easy to use but in order to do it you have to go through the manual process of getting a UTR.
Unless you are already in SA and you have a UTR you have to do a load of chasing around to get this anyway.
Depends on the circumstances but if you can explain why you think you are due a refund, eg emergency tax etc it's easier to do a letter. If you phone they will also tell you what to do. When you send the stuff off they'll do all the calcs for you too.0 -

Hi yes its PAYE rebate, think i will get him to give them a call tomorrow chase it up they have had nearly 3 months. thankyou to everyone for their advice:T0 -
I've been waiting since May too for a refund of overpaid tax!
I have called and chased a couple of times and they have said that due to a change in their computer systems there will be a delay. When I have called them up I have received a letter the following week stating that their systems are being upgraded and I will hear in due course!!:rolleyes:
Hope you hear soon!0 -
I'm playing the waiting game too.
When I call them they are not really helpful, they said they have nothing logged in the computer for me (I made the claim in april then got a letter in june asking me to send further documents which I did and now think they have lost)
I understand they are going through the change in system but I wish they could be a bit more helpful.
I don't want to wait another 2 months for them to say you never sent us documentation so we can't refund you then have further 2 month battle with them for my money.0
