in Credit cards
Someone i know is making a large purchase and I have suggested they make sure they use a credit card in case they have a problem at any point.
They have a lloyds visa debit card, and an Amex and Mastercard credit card (never used yet).Which one of these will give protection?

All credit cards give protection under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 (later revised) providing the purchase is greater than £100.
This covers you for failure to deliver, faulty goods, company liquidation, problems with goods etc. The Credit card compant becomes jointly liable with the company the purchase was made from.
You do have cover with a debit card under the VISA debit card chargeback scheme, though it is much more difficult to proceed with this.

Its just that I thought i read on here recently that amex doesnt give you that cover-can't see how that could be the case though.0

Nope, all credit cards give the cover. It's the LAW !
Exactly the same if the purchase was made on finance or through a loan.0 -
Maestro cards don't have any kind of chargaback systems. It's just like paying with cash.0

Correct, Maestro is Mastercard and the chargeback scheme only applies to VISA which are far more prevelant in debit cards.0

This is true, however you do not need to spend over £100 on the Credit Card.
Provided the total spend is at least £100, you could in theory put just £1 on the Credit Card and pay cash \ debit card for the rest and still benefit from Section 75 protection.
I agree with the advice given that paying by Credit Card is the safest option.0 -
No, youre getting confused with VISA debit and credit cards.
ALL UK issued credit cards offer protection
ONLY VISA debit cards offer protection, it doesn't apply to Mastercard debit cards.0 -
Out of interest Holly, what's the purchase ?0
