I know its about 40mins trip from ciampino airport on coach/taxi to the centre of Rome but do I need to book my transport in advance or just hop on a coach when I get to Rome Ciampino??
I have NOT yet booked an hotel..can anybody reccomend anything cheap and chearful in the centre close to all attractions??
The two things I want to visit are the colloseum, and if poss the olympic stadium football ground, any tips for these, eg will I need to book in advance etc?
Cheers people!

When I went, there was a company offering trips into the centre of Rome just after you went through Customs that seemed to be reliable and very cheap. Click here for more details.
We were there for 3 days and we didnt use public transport once. The city is so nice to walk around, we walked everywhere - but I guess this depends on your health/age, etc!
The hotel we had wasnt brilliant, but it was clean and more than adequate as a base for the travels (after all, I guess the aim is to spend as little time as possible there!).
Worth a look through Quidco if you have an account. They have plenty of "hotel locator" sites, e.g. hotels.com with money back. Every time we've been away, we mostly used octopustravel.com as they always include breakfasts - but they are not in quidco unfortunately.
We went in February time and we didnt need to book anything, but I guess things could be different at this time of year?!0 -
Went last July and booked an apartment thru !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - called Domus Clara. It was nice and cheap, one bedroom, a living room, kitchenette and shower room. It was just down the road from the Colloseum - I've just checked, it's € 110 per night; but there's lots of choices. It was in a lovely courtyard and it wasn't in a touristy area, so the food and services were not high, but much better than the touristy places. There was a gorgeous baker opposite, so breakfast wasn't a problem! You're also slap bang between the two main metro lines, so location is perfect. The Colloseum is packed constantly, so get there as early as humanly possible - and avoid the people dressed in Gladiator costume - they can be quite vicious if you say "No" to them!!
Rome was fantastic, but hot and busy. One of my favourite places was the Trevi Fountain - go about dusk so you get the best of both times. But, it's so full of tourists and people trying to make you buy roses, so enjoy it for what it is... a beautiful fountain.0 -
Hi
Went to Rome and Sorrento and booked all the transport/hotel etc via the internet.
We stayed in a really nice hotel which I found on https://www.tripadvisor.com, Marcella Royal. Very modern rooms, great rooftop garden were you have breakfast or you can have a drink at night! Really reasonable for Rome when we went as well. Trip advisor reviews here :http://rome-hotels.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d203172-Reviews-Marcella_Royal_Hotel-Rome_Lazio.html
We used https://www.terravision.it coaches, you can book on the internet before hand. Drops you off at Rome Termini Station, then you can either walk to the hotel or get a taxi (only 3/4 mins away).
Other tips - watch your bags and valuables like any other city
Also, check the prices of drinks, food and cover charges before you sit down anywhere. We sat down near the Trevi Fountain at a bar nr the corner, were no prices so we just sat down (we didn't anywhere else though)....cost about £16 for 2 ice creams and 2 drinks i think!
Collesium is worth a visit, just go via the subway train and get off at the Colleseo line (how easy is that!).
My only concern is you're not going from long enough! There's loads to see in Rome, we were there for 4 days and we were rushing to see it all, worth going to the Vatican as well. The Pantheon is also worth a visit - top tip, cheap drinks and ice creams right near it at McDonalds! Didn't eat there, too many nice restaurants with Pizza and Pasta, but handy if you want a cheap drink in a busy tourist area!
Good luck and enjoy!0 -
Thanks everybody, I guess Im just going to look for a dirt cheap hotel (but not a shared hostel room as my other half wouldnt like that) in the city centre..If I get somewhere what is close to the colloseum can I really go wrong?0

Collesium is worth a visit, but be prepared to queue to get in, especially on the weekend, you can queue for an hour or more. The Pantheon is not far from The Collesium and is worth a visit, especially if it is raining.
If you are going to Rome, you absolutely must visit The Vatican. It's an incredible sight. Words really cannot describe the enormity of the place. Do get there early though and pay the few Euros extra to climb to the top of the Bascillica. It's just amazing. Again the queues build up as the day goes along so if you can get there early.
The Trevis fountain is very overated. There are normally big crowds trying to see it, and at the end of the day it is only a fountain, in a small square. Also be careful around the Trevis fountain, that is the one part of the city where pickpockets are everywhere taking advantage of the dense crowds as well as extremely agressive people of African origin selling flowers and tat.0 -
I was there recently and used https://www.romecabs.com, they meet you as you come through customs and will help with your luggage right to your hotel door - 45 euros for 2 people.
I stayed at the Milton Roma, which is slightly off the beaten track, the prices reflect that, it was a great hotel and about a 10-15 minute walk to the Colosseum, there is a metro station right accross the street but it is closed and apparently will be for some time, but it is again an easy 10-15 minutes walk to the closest one which will get you (via Termini station) to most places.0 -
wonderful city, but carry your rossary beads saying a novena whilst walking quickly when crossing the road ............they are mad mad mad drivers.
enjoy.

I have also used Romecabs and they are excellent. Thoroughly recommend them.
I hate the taxi drivers around the airport - I find them a mercenary and untrustworthy lot."Who throws a shoe, honestly?"

Thanks for the recomendation of ROMECABS. But do you know if you can also book a taxi for the way back to the airport the day you go home? Ive checked the site and I cant see where it says anything about that!0 -
I've just had a look at the Rome Cabs site, I'm going next weekend. I can't see how you pay, did you pay cash to the driver?0
