Hi fellow money savers,
I am trying to find some information about climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge over New Year (2005)!!!
You have all seen the TV screens of the fireworks going off at 12 midnight, i am trying to find out if anyone knows if they will stop the climbs during the day before and after or so whilst they set things up.
Also does anyone know of how i can get the cost of this down, the travel agent quoted me £90 each, i knows it a once in a lifetime oppurtunity but if i can get ot cheaper why not.
Especially as my partner is terrified of heights.
Many thanks in advance
Kelly

You can do this visit to see if you fancy paying £90 for the Bridge climb
Pylon Lookout
its $8.50Aus which is £3.50.
You can watch the climbers and also get as good a view of the Opera House + the bay. You can also take your camera, which is a no,no on the bridge climb (in case you drop it).
Rates for the Bridge climb are here
Bridge climb cost
and should be about £65, £75 or maximum £93 for the twilight tour.
You can of course book on-line at this site also.
You could ask your question there too.
I looked for discounts for the climb (back in 2003) but didn't find any.
Hope you have better luck.

"BridgeClimb operates every day (except 30 and 31 December)"
so i guess you'll be fine for new year's day which is a sunday - just not new year's eve i'm afraid!
a sunday booking direct with them (day or night, not twilight) costs about £76 including tax.0 -
The bridge climb is incredible and its really worth the money - we went up the pylon too which is a good substitute if you're short of money, but the experience of the climb itself is incredible and was one of our hols highlights, and we're penny pinching students! We booked our climb from the website, as stated above, think ours was around the 65 mark, it helps that the pound is good to aussie dollars at the moment. Have fun!

I have to agree, the bridge climb is incredible. I've done it twice now (not very moneysaving, I know!) and I've loved it both times. The best view is looking out to Circular Quay and the Opera House.................... sigh. I want to do it all over again!Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 #18 £2021.83 declared0

Reading this has convinced me that Mr Sheel and I must do the bridge climb when we are in Sydney in late September , it sounds fantastic
Should I be booking it online now or risk leaving it for a few months?
We spend the first 4 nights in Sydney and as i've never experienced a 20+ hour flight before  i'm a bit worried i'm going to feel awful for the first few days of the holiday , but obviously want to make the most of the visit , so if anyone has any tips i'd be grateful. I seem to remember someone mentioning melatonin
Same old same old since 20080 -
FAO Sheel
Over 9 years since I last went to OZ but one thing I can remember is getting there after flight via Japan non-stop, OK until the afternoon / evening and then suddenly I wanted to go to sleep (very urgently).
Sort of on the right track but when we flew LA to Auckland last year - arrived in Auckland AM and went for a quick nap in afternoon until tea but woke up the following morning.**BERTIE**Did you Know: It costs more than £325,000 a day to run the lifeboat service? As a rule, when I've been on the Bridgeclimb I've booked a week in advance. You can then choose what time of day you go up as opposed to going when there's a space. If you know that you're definitely going to do the climb, book it now. They never seem to have any special offers.
Next time I go to Oz (when will that be???) I want to do a Night climb.......... Sigh. You're all making me very jealous!Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 #18 £2021.83 declared0 -
Thanks chalky and Vicky

I'll book it soon then . Think we're better doing it on the second day there , give us a day to recover from the flight
Our holiday is called Sydney , Rock and Reef and as you can guess , we're also visiting Ayers Rock and the Great Barrier Reef. When we are in Cairns towards the end of the trip , it mentions a scenic Skyrail ride from Kuranda and i'd like to know if anyone has been on that and is worth doing?Same old same old since 20080 -
Ooooh yes, I've done that Sheel! It's a lovely way to see the area. Kuranda isn't the most happening of places, and it's quite an arty place with a couple of markets. Try and find Bob's Wood Art in Kuranda - both my parents and I (on separate occasions) have bought some lovely pieces from there. Most are small enough to fit into your luggage! Bob is based (or at least was) on the main street.
If your ride up to Kuranda is similar to mine, then you'll take the Skyrail up to Kuranda (ie cable car) and the train back down to Cairns. The return rail journey is quite spectacular.
And the "rock" is quite spectacular. Loved that. If you have a chance to walk round it (they call it Uluru now - the aboriginal name for it), then do. It's fascinating seeing some of the ceremonial sites and rocks. If you happen to stay in Alice Springs, then go up to the Old Telegraph Station which is where THE spring is. Not really a sight to wow you, but it was a really nice relaxing spot.Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 #18 £2021.83 declared0 -
Coudn't agree more VickyA the Cairns - Kuranda railway is very good. It's quite a trip to the top and the railway line is quite interesting. Near the top i think there is a large waterfall that the train stops at but if you go at the wrong time of year then there is nothing but in the rainy season i should think it will be quite spectacular. Kuranda is a lovely quaint village. The cable car down is really good as it just passes over the tree tops. Not sure if we had to change gondolas half-way down? but it was really worth the money.
Don't forget Ayres Rock both AM and PM if your trip allows. Unfortunately when we went we climbed the rock (before anyone starts I know you shouldn't but...) which was really exciting as it is really steep.
Also in Cairns you MUST go on a Reef tour / cruise for the day - what an unbeleivable experience (i'll never forget it!!!)
Have a great time (this is turning into an OZ thread isn't it)**BERTIE**Did you Know: It costs more than £325,000 a day to run the lifeboat service? (with no government funding) Please donate to the RNLI0
