I've got both computers recognising each other as workgroup computers and I've got files on the pc I'm trying to access from the laptop. In My Network Places on PC the files are listed that I'm trying to access but they aren't on the laptop. How do you get to see the shared files?

Thanks Browntoa,
Everything was set up ok re stuff on link.
The laptop recognises that the pc is there as part of the workgroup, also 2 other computers on the network, but when I click properties, I am denied access - but only on the pc that I want to view files on. I can look at shared stuff on the other computers. Any more ideas?Torgwen.....................

Open Control Panel - Network Connections. On the left, click 'Set up a home or small office network' and run through the Network Setup Wizard. One of the screens gives the option to Share files and printers. That basically sets up the Guest account. See also How to configure file sharing in Windows XP and How to troubleshoot home networking in Windows XP, particularly the section on troubleshooting file and printer sharing.0

Thanks,
I've run the network set up wizard two or three times on both computers. I'm not sure which one has the problem. The pc has more than one user and it recognizes the wireless laptop as part of the network. The laptop has only one user and recognizes other computers on the network but not the one I am wanting to share files with!Torgwen.....................

Does the computer you want to access have file and printer sharing enabled in control panel, networks, and is file sharing enabled in the firewall settings (control panel, security centre, firewall, exceptions (assuming XP sp2 with XP firewall)). Also in explorer, right click on the c: drive, sharing and security, and check that a sharename and permissions have been setup.
This needs to be done on the PC you want to access, not the PC doing the accessing.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thanks,
I've just run the network wizard again on the pc that I'm wanting to access and found that Windows Firewall turns itself back on each time you run the wizard! How do I stop it?! :rolleyes:Torgwen.....................

I've removed the firewall tick from advanced settings for LAN so that the firewall stays off, it hasn't made any difference so far so I'm rebooting both computers.Torgwen..........

I'm confused with this now... on the laptop, it lists the computers on the network except for the one I'm trying to access. When I go to "view workgroup computers" it lists the laptop and the one I am trying to access but not the others.Torgwen..........

on the one you are trying to get at, have you checked that filesharing is enabled on the c: drive.
if it is, on the laptop, try mapping a drive (explorer, tools, map network drive) to \\pcyouwanttogetatsname\c$, assuming that is what you have called the sharename.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
