Are they both useing the same xp e.g Home/pro ?If it doesn't fit, force it; if it breaks, it needed replacement anywaySarcasm helps keep you from telling people what you really think of them

The major point to remember on this is that firewalls MUST be switched off!
(Norton firewall/mcafee firewall/zone alarm/windows firewall)
I say this because a lot of reasons for faulty file/printer sharing come from the basics! So make sure these are both disabled.
Also make sure the machines are on the same workgroup, and are both auto-getting the ip addresses (if you have not manually configured ip's they prob will be!)
If you have manually applied ip addresses, make sure they are on the same subnet ip, and using the same default gateway.
Hope this helps.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

One other thing... to test whether both pc's can talk to each other do the following:
On machine 1:
Start > run > cmd
type in: ipconfig
Record the first ip address (should be like 192.168.0.2)
On Machine 2:
start > run > cmd
type in: ping ipaddressofmachineone
i.e
ping 192.168.0.2
If they can talk you'll get a reply saying the destination responded in <1ms or something similar in a long line of text
If it can't, you'll see something like "destination host unreachable" or "Request timed out"[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

the ips are all set to auto and the firewalls are allowing file & print sharingTreat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

Ok, they may be allowing but please disable them as well! It is just for testing purposes but who knows where the problem may lie without actually disabling certain procedures!
Also what are the test results? And are the computers 100% on the same workgroup (such as MSHOME or WORKGROUP)[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Try looking at Simple File Sharing , unsure if it exists in home but in pro you have to turn this off to set permissons.
open my computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > then down the bottom there is a tick box (Simple file shareing) tick or untick the box and do the wizard againIf it doesn't fit, force it; if it breaks, it needed replacement anywaySarcasm helps keep you from telling people what you really think of them

Right mouse click on my computer > click properties > click "Computer Name" tab:
There are 3 things:
Computer Description
Full Computer Name:
Workgroup
Make sure Workgroup is the same (click "Change" underneath if not... and make them both the same)
Also make sure "Full computer name" does not have any special characters in and are just plain text. Once again you can change this by clicking change.
Also make sure to do to the ip ping test afterwards if its still not working. If the computers can't talk to each other through ping, its more of a link problem rather than an actual config problem...[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."
