Post Office Connection Fee

Options
Ok, so i set up my line with PO after advice from talk talk pointed me towards this better option. I had previously put an order in with BT but then realised that talk talk wouldn't be able to take over the line if i was in 12 month contract with BT. BT said my line was already active & would be activated without sending anyone out (but i cancelled this and went with PO). Despite me telling PO the line was active they said an engineer would have to come out - and that i may be subject to a £120 activation charge "why would i be charged this?" i asked - they said that it is when the line is NOT active, ie. an old or brand new line & that they would not be able to tell me the cost until the engineer came. She said if the line was active i probably wouldn't be charged anything. Engineer came, literally spent 30 secs in my flat and would you guess - the line is active. Engineer said there would be no cost for it. Couple weeks later my bill arrives from post Office - £105 activation fee!! Not happy.

I have spoken to PO who have forwarded the case to their billing dept to investigate - I said that I was mis-informed and was given the impression there would be no activation charge - they tried to tell me to just pay the whole bill and if sorted they would refund it at a later date...I think not, spoke to someone else who said just to pay the line rental and ignore reminders until the billing dept get back to me.

After a month of waiting for PO and for Talk Talk to take over my line im finally going live tommorow - this is the last thing I need..

Has anyone got any advice for when the billing team get back to me (and no doubt) tell me to get stuffed?

Cheers!

I know Quentin is a big PO Phone fan/expert and normally answers all manner of questions from people on this service but he seems to have missed your post for some inexplicable reason. Maybe he will be along shortly now I've bumped it to the top...

I don't understand why people go with a third party for basic line rental, in the event of a problem with the line it will be BT that will fix it.
If you are with a third party, Tiscali, the Post Office, Talk talk et al, then you are going to have to book your repair via them and won't be able to talk directly to BT.
In the case of Talk Talk, they will move both your telephony and broadband to their LLU system at the exchange, and you will be bound by their T&Cs to use them alone as your broadband ISP. In the event of you wanting to move your broadband at a later date then moving back to BT could well then cost £125 or so.

I'm at a bit of a loss to undertand why the Post Office would take you on, for free without some form of contract.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

i went with the third party so i could get talk talk, if i were to have gone with bt i would have entered into a 12 month contract and would have been unable to get talk talk (or many other bb ISP's) to take over the phone line as many of the best deals around at the mo are for bb and phone.. BT's phone & bb is quite expensive...

Surey the PO have also put you on a 12 month line rental contract? Why would they reconnect you for free so that you could immediately take your line rental to TalkTalk?

There is no minimum contract with Post Office for line rental.

So how can they offer free or minimal cost reconnection-surely they have to pay BT something-how do they ever earn this back?

But if you migrate your contract elsewhere after a month...?

    I don't know!

In the "old" days, there was never a charge from BT for simply switching on a stopped line, so presumably the cost is minimal. PO (like all the others) does charge for a new connection, and I guess that charge covers the cost + profit for the operation.
