Urban legend
Here I go again on my own....0 -
I'm no expert in this area, so this is just a novice's viewpoint.
I wasn't convinced by last April's stay-away campaign, and I remain unconvinced by this latest attempt. I accept that Esso & BP may have an extensive network of petrol stations (retail outlets), but their core business is that of oil refining and supply of petrol & DERV (diesel) - the BP & Esso refiners supply about 35% of the UK market; some is supplied to its own outlets, the rest ends up at supermarkets (usually via a wholesaler/distributor).
The 1998 Office Of Fair Trading report entitled Competition In The Supply Of Petrol In The UK suggested that the BP & Esso supplied 42% of all fuel in the UK at that time - so there is some basis for boycotting BP & Esso. But, in my humble opinion, the thinking is flawed - simply because fuel is perceived as a necessary commodity rather than a luxury product. Consumers need fuel. If this campaign succeeds in consumers boycotting Esso & BP garages, demand will simply switch to supermarkets - the supermarkets will demand more fuel from the wholsesalers, who will in turn to........yes, you've got it, the Esso & BP oil refiners of this World. Esso and BP retail outlets may suffer slightly, but increased wholesale supplies will compensate accordingly.
