in Credit cards
I Have Given My Message This Title, As Basically That Is What The Credit Cards Are Doing, Along With Visa International, And Numerous Retailers Abroad. The Reason They Are Getting Away With It Is Because People Are Not Expecting It To Happen When It Does Happen, And It Is Happening Abroad When We Might Be Off Guard, More So Than If We Were At Home. We Also Believe The Retailer When They Assure Us That The Transaction Will Be Debited In Sterling. This Is My Story ................
I Picked Up My Rental Car At Alicante Airport With Victoria Cars. I Was Presented With Their Invoice To Sign For 213 Euro Which I Agreed With, So I Signed, After Emphasizing That I Wanted To Be Billed In Euro. When I Received My Nationwide Credit Card Statement, There Was An Amount On It In Sterling From A Company With A Name I Did Not Recognize. I Phoned Nationwide And Told Them I Did Not Recognise The Transaction, So They Sent Me A Form To Complete To That Effect. They Also Sent Me A Copy Of The Signed Invoice In Euro, And An Unsigned Sales Slip For The Unrecognised Amount In Sterling With An Unrecognised Company Name On It. When I Phoned Nationwide, They Said That The Unsigned Sales Slip Corresponded To The Signed Invoice In Euro. I Said That It Did Not As At The Time Of The Transaction I Did Not See It, Did Not Sign It, Was Not Offered The Chance To Sign It Even. The Girl Repeatedly Said To Me That I Had Signed The Sales Slip In Sterling. I Had To Repeatedly Point Out To Her That I Did Not Sign It, And That The Signature Box Was Empty. This Was Where My Linguistic Skills Came Into Use, As I Had To Point Out To Her That The Box With " Firma Titulador " Meant Cardholders Signature, And That It Was Evident That There Was No Signature In The Box. I Think Too Often We Credit The People At The End Of These Notorious And Extortionate 0845 Or 0870 Numbers With More Intelligence Than They Deserve.
Anyway, I Have Completed The Form To Verify That I Do Not Recognise The Sterling Amount On My Statement, And I Will Keep Everyone Informed As To What Happens.
I Think What Is Important Is For People To Realise That They Can Request A Copy Of A Transaction, If They Do Not Recognise It, And To Dispute That Amount.
It Is Quite Interesting That I Have Not Seen That Ridiculous Advert Of Nationwide On The Tv Recently, About Using Their Credit Card Abroad.
It Is Also Ironic That On The Very Same Statement, The Following Sentence Appeared As " Additional Information " - " When Using Your Card Abroad Some Shops May Convert Your Purchase Into Sterling, But Are Likely To Use Higher Exchange Rates And Charge Commission. Always Make Sure You Pay In The Local Currency And Nationwide Will Ensure You Get The Best Rate And No Commission Is Charged ". What A Joke !!!!!!!

But surely the scam has been done by the car hire firm.Nationwide played no part in the story you told.

I would just like to add, in the first paragraph of my message I should have said, " we also believe the retailer when they assure us that the transaction will be debited in euro ". Sorry for the mistake !:beer:0
-
Not a Nationwide scam. It is a scam pulled by the retailer.
Also no need to capitalise EVERY first letter, just the first one in the sentence will do!!"An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
I agree with ejones999 - this doesn't seem to be Nationwide's fault. (Though original post is not easy to follow with all those initial caps.)0
-
On the contrary, ejones. As I said in my message, Nationwide have debited my account with an unrecognised amount from an unrecognised company, using an unsigned sales slip. And then, as I also said in my message, the Nationwide employee insisted that I had signed in agreement with the amount in sterling, yet there is no signature on the sales slip.:beer:0

Just to clarify things, my original message was typed in capitals. I did not intentionally start every word with a capital letter ! Apologies for confusing certain people !:beer:0

Original post formatted properly for ease of reading:I have given my message this title, as basically that is what the credit cards are doing, along with VISA International, and numerous retailers abroad. I think too often we credit the people at the end of these notorious and extortionate 0845 or 0870 numbers with more intelligence than they deserve.
Anyway, I have completed the form to verify that I do not recognise the sterling amount on my statement, and I will keep everyone informed as to what happens.

It is quite interesting that I have not seen that ridiculous advert of Nationwide on the TV recently, about using their credit card abroad.
It is also ironic that on the very same statement, the following sentence appeared as " additional information - when using your card abroad some shops may convert your purchase into sterling, but are likely to use higher exchange rates and charge commission. Always make sure you pay in the local currency and Nationwide will ensure you get the best rate and no commission is charged ". What a joke !!!!!!!
I had an AVIS transaction with DCC applied. My Nationwide statement said "you've saved money by paying abroad with Nationwide". Excuse me - NO, I jolly well hadn't because AVIS had scammed the saving out of me.0 -
Working 4 another uk bank myself, i can tell u that its not a bank thing
Because u have a UK bank account and the UK is not part of the euro, even if u use ur card in a euro country, ur own bank at home will convert the euro amount in pounds sterling and put it onto ur account that way
So even if u said at the car rental place u wanted ur account debited in euro's, it wouldn't matter because it would have been converted at the exchange rate on that date
Hope this helps0 -
MarkyMark, how can Nationwide do anything about DCC? It is completely out of their control. It is something that Visa International need to do something about rather than Nationwide. Nationwide might be able to lobby Visa, but in the whole scheme of things Nationwide is probably a very, very small player for Visa."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0
