Put the kettle, mugs and tea making equipment seperate to everything else so you can make a cuppa when you get there!
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

kettle, tea, coffe, cups , toilet roll, cleaning stuff, kitchen roll, biscuits all in one box.
Mobilephone and charger together.
Label ALL boxes to what is in them.
Cash in your pocket for a chippy lunch and a chinese dinner ;)
A good nights sleep.
Take photos of the house you are leaving and ones of your new one. I love my before and after piccys .

Good luck xx
TRYING hard to be a good money saver
• Have towels, soap and bedclothes handy as well. Making the bed should be your very first task when you get to the new house - there is nothing more awful than spending all day unpacking and then realising when you're totally knackered that you still have to make the bed. And leave clean towels in the bathroom, it's horrible getting into bed dirty...

Good luck. It will be hectic but you will get it all done...
• Make sure that you've informed all of the important people that you're moving out - utilities suppliers (make sure you give final readings), council tax etc. Also rememeber to set up postal redirection. It's amazing how many things you forget to change, and having a few months redirection really helps you to get on top of it.

Also, LABEL YOUR BOXES! Make sure you know what's in them, and keep 'important' things (kettle, toaster, plates, forks, mugs) in one box. There's nothing worse than having to unpack three or four boxes to find the one thing you need. If you're worried about people knowing what's in them, then just give them a number, and keep a list of what number corresponds to what contents. When I move, I also label boxes with two different colours - say blue for upstairs and orange for downstairs. If you want, you can go wild and have a colour for kitchens and bathrooms too. It sounds a bit over the top, but I find it really helps if removal men (or your mates!) can see where a box needs to go. It saves answering the question 'where do you want this love?' a billion times.

It's also helpful to have an 'essentials' box - teabags, first-aid kit, spare lightbulbs, a few tools, sellotape, a torch, LOO ROLL (v. important :)), soap for the bathroom, things like that. They're the kind of things that you generally find you need but can't find when you need them. It's really handy to have them all in one place.
• :o i moved house 1 year ago after being pretty well cemented into the old house. :o:o

only advise i have is invest in a big black marker and write the contents on every box that you fill. and put a sticky label on every black bag you fill.

i marked every box but not the black bags ! try looking for pillows/bedding at 1 am when you have a bedroom of unmarked black bags ( i am talking 30 + black bags! ) :rotfl: :rotfl:

when you dismantle something like your bed put the parts/bolts etc in a food bag and selotape them to the biggest part. nothing worse than sleeping on the floor for 2 days because you cant find the bits to put the bed together! :o:o

buy lightbulbs -- try looking for the bits for building the bed when you have no light ! :o

get the menus for the local takeaways, and a nice bottle of wine the night you move in.

best of all good luck! :j :j
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!

I've moved at least 35 times...never again.

Keep one box for clearing up the old place, move it last - include kettle and screwdrivers/essentials and move it first into the new place. Include loo roll, bin bags, gloves, dusty pan in this box.

Mix heavy stuff such as books with light stuff such as clothes to balance out the weight.

Label everything, but put which room it needs to go into in the new house. If you are using removal men, then put a label on the doors of the new place that matches the labels on the boxes.

when packing, do each room at a time, and make sure you have plenty of packing tape and boxes, take the boxes and tape [and newspapers for wrapping] into the room - don't attempt to carry stuff into a central room and then pack it - you'll waste hours.

Keep black bin bags for rubbish and use other colour bags [white] for stuff you want to move - and keep at least one black bin bag in every room as you go - chuck stuff out immediately or pack it - don't think too much about it.

Anything you don't want, freecycle this weekend and tell them you will leave it outside at specified times - and just let them pick it up. Even better if it is a job lot.Don't think you'll freecycle it when you get there - you'll end up storing it.

Keep a bottle of made up squash/water full for drinks - else you will have to keep stopping.

And definitely get take out on Monday evening - and the first thing to do when you have moved everything is make the bed up - most other stuff can usually wait.

Good luck.

xxx

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Phone a friend and get some help! and have one on hand at both houses if possible, making tea and keeping the removal men sweet ...

Also the only thing in over 25 years of marriage which has left me seriously considering divorce was DH not telling me we'd run out of packing tape for making boxes up. Fortunately he was 100 miles away when I discovered this or it would have been murder. And I had friends ...

Make sure you have functioning keys for the new place BEFORE you leave the old.

I have just one tip for you: It's easier to throw away the junk before you move, rather than after. Make three piles:
Stuff you definitely need
Stuff you don't need
Stuff that might come in useful some time
Then take the last two piles to the charity shop/dump.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
