new BT line - minimum contract period

Hi,
I'm considering having a BT line installed at my house (it has never had a BT line). (Because ultimately I would like to get the TalkTalk free broadband offer). The cost is £124.99.
However, I've rung BT twice and the first time I was told that there is a 12 month minimum line rental contract period. The second time I called them (as I wanted to clarify some information), they told me that the minimum contract period for line rental is 3 months.
If its 12 months, then I dont think I want to bother (I'll just stick with Telewest for phone/broadband/TV). But 3 months...
I can't find the details on their website
Does anyone out there know the right answer?
TIA

When I got mine in March they said 3 months, I have successfully cancelled it this week (think you have to give 7 days notice) so it can't be a year. The house already had a line installed though.
These charges imply that there may be: (from new terms from 1st Oct)
35. The charges for ending any BT Together service for either a new line or a line that you take over are as follows:
* for a new line where you end the service within the first nine months, £18.00;
* for a line that you take-over and where you end the service within the first month, £13.00; and,
* for a line that you take-over and where you end the service within the second month, £5.00.
These charges do not apply for a customer moving to more expensive options i.e. from BT Together Option 1 to Options 2 or 3 and between BT Together Option 2 and Option 3.
Maybe you should stick with telewest and give them a call to see if they can do you a deal like a lot of other moneysavers:

 Have you read the numerous bad reports about this service posted all over these forums.0 -
I moved into a brand new flat and has a New Bt line installed and had to sign up for a 12 month contact!!
BTW your find that in order to get telewest telephone you will require a BT phone line (well you do here anyway)0 -
It's generally 12months for a brand new install (ie house has never had BT before) or 3months for a reconnect (house has benefited from BT in the past) which may be free reconnect if this is the case.
If you see this thread which discusses the connection fee charged by BT and other general stuff.0 -
Thanks to all. I don't want to sign up to BT for 12 mths, so will stick with Telewest
Flang - sorry if I'm being thick, but what do you mean about needing a BT phone line in order to get Telewest? I have a Telewest cable phone line without having a BT line?0 -

As you know to get telewest or NTL, a BT line isn't required.Tarquinius wrote:Thanks to all. I don't want to sign up to BT for 12 mths, so will stick with Telewest
The only thing you are prevented from doing is moving your linerental away from BT but you can, from day one, move just your calls to any of the numerous and cheaper providers out there. All of which are cheaper than telewest/NTL. In fact, even BT are cheaper than Telewest/NTL!
In the longrun, you'll most likely find this cheaper than sticking with expensive telewest/NTL.0 -

You would save money if you moved just your linerental from telewest to BT and used the many, many other cheaper providers that can be accessed via a BT line and you can still do this during your minimum term with BT.

Or get rid of digital TV and get freeview and get rid of the landline all together and use VOIP for calls so all you'll have to pay telewest is for broadband. Get a free sipgate telephone number and use something like VOIPdiscount for free calls - topup 10 euros every 120 days. This is our new plan with ntl, just need to get an adapter that allows the use of both sipgate and VOIPdiscount now to connect our old phone to the router so we can turn off the pc.
Then keep calling telewest for deals to keep the cost of broadband down.0 -

This has applied for several years and continues to do so.
A new BT line has a minimum term of 1 year.
A reconnection or takeover of an existing BT line has a minimum contract period of 3 months.
However, you can cancel your contract early on payment of a cancellation charge of between £5-£18 as above.

So could you get a new phone line installed, then give them notice to cancel it, maybe pay £11 for the first month and pay £18 = £24?
Wouldn't have to pay the entire contract (£11 x £12) + £18 = £145?
I had to do this with BT broadband once - few years ago now. Had signed up for a 12 month contract, after a few months my financial circumstances dramatically changed, I had to move and go and stay with family for a while as I couldn't afford to continue renting. My family already had BT broadband themselves. So I phoned them up and asked what my options were, they said I had to pay the remainder of the year if I wanted to cancel (was around £250 i think), I asked if I could transfer it to another phoneline (a friend or something) they said I could only transfer it to a BT line in my name! They didn't care at all, all they wanted was their money for the remainder of the contract. I just burst into tears as I just couldn't afford to pay it and it upset me as they weren't even the slightest bit understanding or helpful, and I was lost for words and at a loss of what to say or do. Was at my boyfriends (ex now) parents at the time, think his mum felt sorry for me and took the phone off me, had a go at them and then paid it for me.
- sorry got carried away on that story .. lol0 -

If you had a new line installed (£124.99) it would be on a 12 month contract. If you cancelled it after 1 month you would pay:
One months line rental: £11 (approx)
Contract cancellation charge: £18 (as you are cancelling within the first 9 months)
i.e. a total of £29
You would not have to pay the other 11 months line rental.
This is stated in the BT Price list under cancellation charges.
However, this applies to the "voice" element of the line - not the broadband bit. (that would depend on the exact T&C you agreed at the time)
Those normally say something like:
"if you cancel within the minimum period you will have to pay a fee unless a) you move house and we can't provide it at your new address and/or b) we put our prices up during the minimum period
