Fresh meat

Well, all the talk about value meat has absolutely disgusted me and i am in search of something better for my family. I found this:

http://www.wellhungmeat.com/desc.php?product_id=379

I like the idea of the meal plan and they say all the meat should last a month. I think 42 is pretty good. What do you all reckon. May well use up all the cr*p i have left (dog is hungry ha ha - definitely getting the value sausages in the freezer) and off to tesco to change my order slightly. Then i will be giving it a go. Afraid the dog or kids will be getting the liver tho as i just cannot stomach the idea bleugh
DFW since JAN 2009 - 2014 will be the year i finally clear debts :) Just to see which month :))))

Yes, I think that's good value too (unless you want to eat meat at every meal when I don't think ther'll be enough)-it would suit my family though. I've looked at this site before and liked the look of it. I just prefer to buy locally produced meat which I get from a butcher although I've a nasty feeling he would charge more for the same meat. I haven't seen the meal plan before but I really like the look of it. I'm tempted I must say.

Another good meat box is from Riverford Meat. They do different sizes with a really good selction of cuts. They look more expensive though- the Well Hung box has approx 4.8 kg meat.

I've just ordered one -£50 inc delivery. Will let you know what it is like;)

For my family of 5 eating meat every other day this works out at £3.57 a meal or about 70p a head (inc delivery).

On closer inspection of the quantities involved I can see I shall have to be quite frugal to make this box last a month.

The meal plan suggests using the stewing beef to make a boeuf bourguignon which (with plenty of veg plus dumplings) will stretch to 2 meals for 4. There is only 300g of beef though. Now, I'm willing to stretch the meat, and I'm sure I serve far more than we actually need to eat but it does sound a little stringent. The chicken too is only 1 kg, I normally get one between 1.8 and 2 kg, and just 150g of bacon for a month- we get through 450g in a week and that's mainly as a seasoning for pasta sauces etc.

The meal plan given assumes you count a meal of soup made from the bone stock as a meal, and sandwiches for the kids' lunchboxes as a meal. That's fine by me, we like veggie meals and fish, but I am going to have to stretch the meat if I don't want it to disappear in a fortnight rather than a month.

Another point, I did a comparison shop using my butcher's freezer price list. You have to buy 5lb of each thing to get the good price, but you would get the same amount of meat for just under £20. So for £100 I could buy 5 month's worth of meat from my butcher. He isn't organic but all his pork and chicken in free range and everything is local (apart from the haggis:D ).

There must be schemes that are based in NI or the R of I. I am a bit uneasy about having my meat driven up the M5 when I can get it locally.
  • I wish I'd weighed my meat from the butchers now to have a fair comparrison. Today I bought for £28 and this will last us until the 1st of March (apart from eggs):

2 x chicken fillets (no added water)
6 x pork saugages (made in shop)
    4 x pieces belly pork
    1 x chicken (£5 something)
    2.5lb minced steak
2 x chicken legs (big ones)
    6 x eggs
    Beef joint (£6 something)

I'd have bought two chickens and jointed them if he'd had them but he only had the one left.

Seems quite pricey to me. The bacon is only a 150g pack. Also i wouldn't pay £42 for a meat pack where one of the heaviest/largest things in the pack is Organic Beef Stock Bones (800g). There's a half shoulder of lamb included in the pack that also weighs 800g but a lot of bulk and weight is added to the pack by bones.

  • I have tried to track down one over here - but TBH butchers are thriving here and they pretty much stock all local meat. This is probably a hangup from when I looked at the game delivery thing which was good - pigeons, mallard, teal etc and again we got clobbered with a massive delivery charge - so I had to abandon that idea.

The chicken did look quite small - what's a kilo - 2.25lbs? But I'll be interested to know what you think of the flavour/ quality
