Power Measuring Meter on sale
Options
This has just been posted in another long thread(that many will not read)
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=N67FU&DOY=1m7
These meters are the best way of checking the consumption of any plug-in appliance - Fridge, freezer, W machine, Dryer, PCs TVs DVDs.
You simply plug your appliance into the meter. For instance if you want to know how much electricity your fridge uses you can leave it plugged in for a couple of days and see how much electricity it has used(measured in kWh, or cost in pence)
To dispel some urban myths, you can see just how little your TV uses if left on standby. Those with very high standby consumption will use less than 1p if left on 24 hours. All my TVs are less than 0.2p every 24 hours.

While I can understand the uses of these things I wont be getting one as I think these lead people into spending money to save money.
Say you find out how much your fridge uses, what are you going to do about it? Buy a new fridge? Hardly cost efficient if you ask me, same goes for most white goods.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -

In my case, purely curiosity. I have alot of equipment etc that sits on standby including a media centre PC. The PC has 5 harddrives so I want to see whether it would be worth shutting down completely or leaving in sleep mode etc. Might look at changing to 1 very big harddrive and selling the old 5.

I've bought one entirely out of curiosity BUT at least it will enable me to back up my long-running argument with the missus with regards to the 'TV on standby must cost us loads of wonga' she keeps opining (usually whilst loading up the tumble dryer on a perfectly fine weather day, grrrr). My 6 year old, beautiful Philips Cool Green CRT 32" TV uses the princely sum of 0.2 watts in standby mode, lol. 5000 hours at a cost of 10P?? 44P per year?? Probably incorrect, my maths is shocking (if you pardon the pun)Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -

I have some sympathy with that point of view, although ironically using the meter on a fridge or freezer is perhaps one of the best uses for that device. A faulty seal or breakdown of insulation can cause considerably increased consumption and be very difficult to pinpoint without a meter.
I posted this a while back:My pal borrowed my monitor(that reminds me he has still got it!) and discovered that his old Freezer was using 4kWh a day(about 4 times more than my larger freezer) So as it was costing him approx £120 a year he decided to get rid of it.
Lots of people would like to know how much a washing machine uses on its various programs, or the dishwasher - the monitor tells them.
Lots of people simply have no idea how much appliances use; they worry about a TV on standby, and fill their kettle to the brim!0 -

on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year would be approx 1.7kW, so yes 44p sounds about right
You do realise you could buy a cheap chocolate bar with the yearly savings don't you? or a stamp and some change? Such wanton wastage

I use about 12kw a day of elastictrickery, I'd like to know where I'm using it (fingers crossed I can blame Mrs Phlik and the Phliklets for the majority:cool: )0 -

It turned up today - great service from Maplins.
Cardew, the enclosed instruction details are not what I call complete - would you know the maximum time the counter goes up to? (it appears to be counting up in minutes & seconds).
Thanks.Time is a concept of relativity, yet as a concept, relativity is timeless.0
