I really want to fill some shoe boxes for charity this year. I am going to do 4 boxes which my 4 children will help with 1 each and get them involved and understanding that not everyone in the world is as lucky as they are:

Also i would like to do a couple for the troops i am sure i read somewhere last year there was a way of sending these out to them. Anyone know??

Also if anyone else is doing this maybe we could share tips and any bargains we see to put in the boxes on this thread??

  • www.postpals.co.uk does an elf scheme (like the shoe boxes) for seriously ill children and their siblings. The info will be up on the site in the next week or two :)

Thank you for posting these links, I remember doing these when I was a child and I would like to make one with my daughter so she is giving to other this year. What a lovely lesson you have reminded me of!

    If you want to send one to a soldier, try here;

I sent some money last year but am hoping to make up a box to send this year. I do kids' ones as well. Picked up a few of the kids' activity packs you get in the buffet section of the train to put in this year - they have colouring pencils and bit in. hth!

We do them for Operation Christmas Child every year. We have three children, and they each choose stuff to make up a box for a child of the same age and gender as them.

    This year we have:

Girl aged 2-4 (done by my 3 year old daughter):

Hat and gloves (from Matalan sale £1)
Small Doll (from Store 21 sale £1)
    Teddy Bear (from Poundland £1)
Notebook (from pack of 4 from Poundland 25p)
    Crayons (Morrisons 39p)
    Felt Tip Pens (Morrisons 39p)
    Comb (Savers 25p)
Flannel (from pack of 4 from Morrisons 20p)
Soap (from pack of 4 from Poundland 25p)
Toothbrush (from pack of 5 from Poundland 20p)
Toothpaste (on offer in Superdrug 60p)

Boy aged 5-9 (done by my 5 year old son):

Hat and Gloves (Matalan sale £1)
Set of 2 diggers (Poundland £1)
Plasticine modelling set (Store 21 sale £1)
Notebook (from pack of 4 from Poundland 25p)
    Crayons (Morrisons 39p)
    Felt Tip Pens (Morrisons 39p)
    Comb (Savers 25p)
Flannel (from pack of 4 from Morrisons 20p)
Soap (from pack of 4 from Poundland 25p)
Toothbrush (from pack of 5 from Poundland 20p)
Toothpaste (on offer in Superdrug 60p)

Boy aged 5-9 (done by my son aged 7):

Hat and gloves (Matalan sale £1)
Set of 2 cars (Poundland £1)
    Jigsaw (Matalan sale £1.50)
Notebook (from pack of 4 from Poundland 25p)
    Crayons (Morrisons 39p)
    Felt Tip Pens (Morrisons 39p)
    Comb (Savers 25p)
Flannel (from pack of 4 from Morrisons 20p)
Soap (from pack of 4 from Poundland 25p)
Toothbrush (from pack of 5 from Poundland 20p)
Toothpaste (on offer in Superdrug 60p)

Still need to get sweets for each box, which will be the 3 for £1 bags from Morrisons.

So each box costs roughly £5-£6, plus then there is the £2.50 donation to be sent with each one.

The kids will also send a card in their box, with a photo of themselves.

I would also like to do a box/present for an elderly person in the UK, I lost my Grandpa on Boxing Day 2007 and he was my last surviving grandparent, so I would like to send something to someone in memory of my own Grandparents. Does anyone know of a scheme which does this?

I have started buying bits and pieces for my operation xmas child box and told my daughter all about it. I was wondering if there were any charities to provide christmas gifts to children in the UK that would otherwise do without?

  • Helgy- what about ringing your local nursing home and asking there? a few years back my grandpa was involved in an accident just before christmas so my nan had to go into a home. needless to say presents were the last thing on our minds but she got a visit from father christmas and got given a gift (as did everyone in the home)

Rummer-last year i phoned around a bit and got given the details of the office which runs my local domestic violence unit and then dropped off various gifts for the children or adults who would other wise be going without

I think the TV programme "This Morning" do some sort for children in the UK but i think that is more donate a new toy not a shoe box of treats. I have a couple toys left over from the Boots glitch couple weeks agao so am going to donate them when the campaign starts :T

  • This Morning stopped their appeal last year (and maybe the year before?), I dont know if they are going to do it this year, i think they have changed to just asking for a donation over the phone

Thanks for starting this thread. My DS has just come home from school with a letter about a shoebox appeal.

I was going to ask what you all put in them as this will be the 1st year i have donated in this way, i normally donate all the 3rd gifts from the boots 342 to a local scheme but DS really wants to do this one instead this year.

the one he has is: www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk

I always buy a little something for the elderly residents where we live, it's a great way to introduce yourself (if you havent already) plus the recipients are very greatful many of them are on their own for xmas, if i could i would have them all round at mine for xmas dinner but i dont have the room.

We dont look for a local scheme we just keep an eye out for our neighbours and on xmas eye, whilst it's still light (so we dont intimidate or scare them) we go and knock on their doors and give them their christmas cards & presents.

I might do little xmas hampers this year, depends on what i can pick up on my travels.
:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T
:T fortune with those less fortunate :T
:T than themselves - you know who you are!
