Have never shopped in either of these before.
I have a Lidl near me but not an Aldi.... is there much difference?
To be honest I'm an ASDA/Tesco girl; I'll take a lot of convincing

i used to use a lidl when i was a student (they opened one beside the halls) and found them ok. most of the stuff i bought tho was there one off goodies rather than groceries, tho i do remember a bottle of peach schnappes...just not the drinking of it!
i do most of my shopping at asda with the occasional trip to tesco/morrisons. there isn't a lidl or aldi near me now or i'd give them another try.0 -
give it a try, you may find that in aldi there are things like marmite, branston pickle, stella and various branded products, lidl alos have branded products, their groceries arent bad either, tbh i prefer aldis products more but thats my opinion, oh and they charge for bags so take your ownNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

Not a lot both stock the same sorts of goods.
I personally can't do a whole shop in either. Apologises to any one who can. But they stock a lot of pre-packed foods and loads of cakes, chocolate etc. But do have limited stocks of certain items. Like frozen veg it was all mixed together. I perfer it all seperate.
I have a local Aldi and only buy there ravioli and sometimes there ice cream wafers. As they are yummy but a not a frequent treat.
It is about trial and error. You might find there are only a few things that you can buy or want from there.
I don't shop in Tescos anymore from personally choice. Even though my local is open 24 hours a day. Don't like the strangle hold on the high street.
I use a combination of Sainburys/Asda but mainly Morrisons now. I know that all supermarkets are bad for the high street.
If you can take a trip in the evening when it is quiet. As it can get busy during the day. And they will often only have max of two tills open. Task your own bags as they charge or use a box from the shelf.

There's a thread over on the shop but don't drop board:

Personally, I do most of my shopping at Aldi (as it's closest) get some particulars from lidl (there's a few brands there) and then top up at Tesco.
I noticed it made a large difference to our shopping bill and I don't notice the quality is too noticeable (as long as you get the right things)£2 savers club = £52 - spending money for holiday0 -
Before my lightbulb moment I would not have set foot in these places. I went in Lidl and Netto once each, but not with an open mind
I'm ashamed to say.
However, paupers can't afford to be choosy, so I went back for a second - admittedly rather cautious - look. I bought a few items and crept out hoping no-one would see me. I have to say though, that I have been amazed, nay completely gobsmacked, by the quality of the things I've had from Lidl in particular (still a bit squeamish about Netto). I've also been really impressed by Aldi, although it's further away and needs a special trip, which kind of defeats the object really. My advice is to try it and see what you think. I bet you'll be sorry you didn't do it sooner. I'm no longer ashamed to say I shop at Lidl and I've persuaded many colleagues to go and try it for themselves. In fact I'm LOUD and PROUD about Lidl now!
There is an excellent thread on the 'Shop don't drop board' entitled 'the great what to buy/not to buy at Lidl/Aldi/Netto' it's many pages long, but worth reading when you've got the time - it'll give you a good idea what to look out for, and prepare you for the payment system (cash or debit card only), lack of baskets etc. Once you get the hang of the system it's fine, honest. I tend to go on a Wednesday morning, it's my day off, and it's always quiet then.Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0 -
We have an Aldi here, but to be honest I was not impressed at all. I tend to go to Iceland once a month to fill my freezer and then shop between tesco and morrisons, local butcher and greengrocer and Iceland in between sometimes too. Going to Iceland for frozen stuff made a huge difference to my shopping bill instead of buying frozen stuff from tescos.Official DFW Nerd #148

My OH shops at Lidl out of preference. She finds them particularly good at dog or cat food and I find them particularly good at chocolate and sweets![strike]-£20,000[/strike] 0!0

There is an aldi near where i work and so recently i went there and had a browse.
Used to live in Germany, so know lidl/aldi/plus and know what to expect.
Love the continental meats, the antipasti - olives, red peppers stuffed with feta cheese, aubergine involtini etc.
Have yet to try the cooking meats - saw some really nice pork teher recently
and the tinned tomatoes - asda's are terribly watery (unlike Morrison's )
I am definitely going back.
There seems to be more choice in them here than there was in germany. Will still go to asda and sainsburys for stuff that cant be got in Lidl.* * * Catriona's Credit Card Countdown * * * from -£16k to debt neutraldom - for my debt diary click here
