Has anyone visited Lapland?

Would like some advice on a day trip to Lapland this December. There seems to be so many companies offering the day trips, i wondered if anyone had any experiences they could share with me. My daughter will be almost 5, would it be enjoyable for her? All info greatly appreciated. Thank you.,

We went to Lapland last Christmas but were lucky enough to be able to stay for a two week holiday. Can't recommend it enough and it should be absolutely magical for your daughter. All I can say is .................if you can manage longer than a day - its a lot of travelling and very tiring from what i've heard.

We went on Dec 18th 2005 with Cosmos (daughter 6) she loved it.
It was a very hectic day but well worth it. I wouldn't do it again as once you've done and all that.
If there's anything in particular you want to know then please pm me and I will gladly help...

    ...or post here of course
    I haven't got one!

I had a five day break and the longer stay was better.

we wouldn't be able to stay longer than the day as we also have a little boy who will be 2 in december and unforunatly, it looks like he will have to stay behind due to the cold weather there. cheekymole - did you have to provide your own clothing with Cosmos or did they provide it? some I have seen say you have to take your own skisuits, boots etc which makes it seem costly for a day trip. what sort of things did you get to do? (and did you meet the REAL father christmas! lol)

My youngest was 2 when I went and although he cope quite well, I would say for a child to really enjoy it they need to be older.

We have been twice both for 5 days. I would recommend Lapland fully. I would recommend perhaps waiting a year and then going for longer than a day (the amount you pay for a day trip you can look around and get a few more days not paying that much extra). I would only say wait so your little one can go as well because some youngsters can not cope with the cold nor can they join in all the activities.

We have been twice with Cosmos and they did not provide clothing on the longer trips but they do on the day trips. However for 2006 they are providing clothing for all trips.

Lapland trips are very very expensive, however you will probably fall in love with Lapland it is a very special holiday.

Suffice to say that December 2005 we paid almost 5 grand for a log cabin for 4 nights for 3 adults and 2 children full board. Then we paid another £175 for a long snowmobile safari for 2 adults. Although it was a fantastic trip it is a fantastic amount of money just for 4 nights. However it was very well organised in a very beautiful uncommercialised part of Lapland (Yllas) and the trips to Santa's village, Arctic Circle ceremony are very good. And Santa comes to the hotel and gives everyone a decent present.

We love the area so much and the winter sports we have booked a weeks holiday with Inghams for January 2007. For four persons half board it is £1218 half board with the snowmobile rides, husky rides etc about a third of the price with them compared to Cosmos. In fact Cosmos are doing a New year trip this year for 5 nights which wait for it would cost us £3650. They do trips prior to Christmas when you can see Santa and have a Santa's dinner etc.

If you want to do Santa, Santa and more Santa (which we did with the little ones), then an organised trip is expensive but very magical.
No Matter what you do there will be critics.
  • I went to lapland for three days christmas 04 with my wife and 3 1/2 year old boy. very magical. Highly recomend spending more than 1 day. On a day trip you have to get up so early you risk the little ones burning out before the day is through.

I went to Lapland with my 2 children a couple of xmas's ago. We went with Transun and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish.

The only advice I would have is dont pay for the extras before you go as part of the booking fee. When you get there there will be people offering sleigh rides, snowmobiles and husky rides etc etc at a cheaper rate than they charge at the travel agent. Also the queue for father christmas is very long in December. We went on 6th dec and queued for 2 and a half hours with a load of bored, screaming children to see him.

    Yes Cosmos provide everything
You get off the plane walk throught he terminal and then out the other side for a 100yard walk to another building where all your clothing is waiting for you (skisuit and boots) It's all in a big bag with your name on and you can leave anything in the bags that you won't need for the day. We wore a few thin layers and took scarves gloves and hats. It was only -7 when we were there but the week before it had been -27.
It was all well organised, food was good
You are split into 2 groups when you arrive and each group does the oppsite of the other
    We did,

am - search for Father Christmas
    Dinner
    pm snowmobile
    husky ride
    tobogganning
    reindeer ride.
These only lasted about 5-10 minutes each but the experience is fantastic
    I haven't got one!
