Advice required please. Cordless electric kettle

We have a Russell Hobbs cordless kettle but it makes a fearful noise the moment we switch it on. We are looking to buy a new kettle but would like a quiet one.
Can anybody suggest one please?

Is there such a thing? Most kettles are made to boil rapidly. The physics of the whole thing is such that the water is heated so quickly that it makes a lot of noise trying to turn itself into steam. I have an Aga with a nice old Aga kettle, it is almost silent because it heats up slowly, so the theory has to be find a kettle with a low wattage. But expect to have to wait several minutes for it to boil.

I was in a hotel recently and the little kettle boiled water very quickly without a sound until it actually boiled.
That is what I'm looking for in a larger kettle.

I'm glad someone else has noticed that they are getting noisier. I thought it was just me going mad! I've tried a couple of new ones lately and find the ones with the concealed element are the noisiest.

  • I think those Russell Hobbs kettles have some fluid (ink?) inside the element to help boli the water quicker, I seem to recall that's the cause of the noise.

We used to have one and I have to say that we actually 'missed' the noise when we bought a different brand!

On a tangent, the noise made by kettles is a known problem. There used to be a bit about some University work here but it's half-gone, and I don't see it here.
The Stealth kettle was a Design, Make and Test project carried by a group of 4th year students in colaboration with an industrial sponsor.

    Thanks for the reply.
We used to descale regularly but since moving back to Scotland there's no need as the water is so soft here.

I've resurrected this thread as we desperately need advice on buying a new cordless kettle which does not drown out all other sounds in the house when switched on!!
With our new kitchen we looked around and having had a Morphy-Richards kettle in the past, bought one of their flashy brushed S/S MONTANA kettles. This was when they were new and quite expensive, notice the price has dropped like a lead weight now the word has got around.
They look good, but are SO noisy! Plus it leaks, is covered in limescale (on the outside) etc. etc. It had a limescale filter which melted after 3 months. The whole point about these concealed element jug kettles is "no need to descale". So any recommendations please.
