on friday we are going to MIL's house in norfolk from us its a 3hr journey and just wondering how to amuse the little darling aged nearly 3 and nearly 1 in the car for all that time. 3yo wont be too bad as we can take a colouring book and crayons but 1yo is a nightmare anything we give him he throws and he hates being in the car seat at the best of times...the feeling of dread is creeping over me everytime i think about friday.
another thing MIL has 2 dogs http://www.mysharpei.co.uk/ like these ones and my 2 aren't particularly fond of dogs 1yo likes them more as he tends to crawl/walk after them, than after getting trodden/sat on realises there not much fun. i'm just dreading daughter being terrified of MIL's precious dogs they are well behaved though (dogs not kids)

Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts

have thought about taking daughters story/rhymes cd but the thought of listening to the 3 little pigs (her fav) for 3 hours straight doesn't bear thinking aboutOther women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts0

Can you make the journey at "nap time" so they will sleep some of the way?
The tape is a good idea and it works. Just grit your teeth and try to sing along cheerfully for the umpteenth time
I always make up a travel pack with a couple of new books, paper and pencils and a small game or toy. It doesn't cost much from cheap shops and keeps my two occupied. Here I go again on my own....0 -

If she can't cope with headphones, some new CDs might help ... you if not her!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

I can't manage to get my little one to keep stuff on her lap, is one of those things like a table any good?
I try to go away at naptime and with a good supply of dummies, although I'd rather she didn't have them it keeps her quiet.
I bought some of those car tidies and filled them up with little odds and ends and that works, also try to replenish toys so that the child doesn't get bored of them.WW Gold Member, trying to maintain !!!Hayden born July 07Tabitha born April 05Poppy born July 030 -
With our littl'un we used to keep 'car toys' so they weren't toys he normally had. Couple that with mum in the back while dad (me) drove meant we rarely heard a squeak out of him.
Now he's "two and a calf" (his words not mine, but he is two-and-a-halfish) he prefers to sit in the front (suitably restrained and back from the airbag) and now we get a full running commentary of every single tree, telegraph pole, car, wire, hedge, bump in the road, sheep, cow, bird, telephone box, lorry, tractor, pylon, farm, river, bridge and person (this is not the total list - but you get the idea) - you have no idea how quiet it was when he just cried lolThere are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't
In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice0 -

Mine have an A4 clipboard each for paper. They manage to hold that on their knees ok. When I was little, my parents gave us a tea tray each. That might work too as the lip stops the pencils rolling off.
I've usually put stuff in a bag on the back seat between them and they've managed to reach ok.
Another thought! The cbeebies website has pictures of TV characters to print out and colour in.Here I go again on my own....0 -
some good ideas there i am defiantly thinking nap time is the good idea daughter has nursery on the friday morning so hopefully she'll be tired by the time we leave (about 12.30) after lunch she'll be ready for her nap i just hope she doesn't pee in the car when she's asleep.!
Any advice on the dog situationOther women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts0 -
When I was little, my parents used to do long drives at night time. We set off at bedtime and slept all the way, then had a light snack and went to bed when we got there. Not great if you don't like night driving (it doesn't work for me but it's an option at least.)
No idea about the dogs. Sorry!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
i had a dog and most of my friends were ok with it but my best friend and her daughter (my goddaughter) didnt like dogs so when i knew she was coming round i put the dog in another room mainly my bedroom. i had a policy of its my dog my home and if you dont like it etc but that soon wore off when my friends stopped coming round so a bit of giving way was needed on my behalf.. tell your mother in law that your your not totally comfortable with the dogs around your children. keep an eye on how the dogs and the children are with each other but if at any point your children get distressed abt the dogs tell your mil so she notices as well (some dog owners dont see it) if she wont remove the dogs from the room tell her and your husband that you will have to think twice abt visiting in the future.. My ex mother in law has a snappy poodle and was warned that if it went for my daughter i would stop her going round oh and ring its scrawny neck never liked it anyway..Those we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear
