I saw this today: http://www.iamscruelty.com/index.asp

I was shocked and upset, I think its not only these people who sell dog food that is tested in horrible way, so I wondered about feeding my dogs on homemade dog food.
I have 2 jack russell terriers who I only feed on dry food, one has a funny tummy so cannot eat sloppy food, so just giving them my scraps is out (they would love it!!), but I cant afford to feed them expensive ethical stuff and I wondered if anyone had any ideas please?

thats surely just about Iams - use another brand? And tbh 1 person boycotting isn't going to make a difference (and yes I know if everyone had that attitude...) and would you rather your pets suffer?0

Hi DenBo,
There are some threads on the Pets and Pet Care board that should help:
Comercial dog food:Is there anyone who does`nt buy it?
HM dog food
Ideas please for homemade dog treats
I'll move your thread over to that board to see if you can get more replies.

 I dont agree, one person can make a difference by boycotting companies, if you add up all the "one person"s in the world who boycott a company they can change things. It isnt only Iams who test their food cruelly:
"Boycott animal testing: Quick guide to animal testing pet food companies
1.. Nestlé Purina Petcare owns:
1.. Friskies Petcare: Bonio, Winalot, Spillers, Felix, Fido, Friskies, Arthur's, Choosy, Go Cat, Gourmet, Vital Balance
2.. Alpo*: Mighty Dog
3.. Ralston Purina*: Purina, Edward Baker Petfoods
2.. Mars owns:
1.. Pedigree Petfoods: Pedigree, Cesar, Whiskas, Sheba, Kitekat, Pal, Chappie, Bounce
2.. Royal Canin (majority shareholder) : Royal Canin, James Wellbeloved
3.. Colgate-Palmolive owns:
1.. Hill's Pet Nutrition: Science Diet, Prescription Diet
4.. Procter & Gamble owns
1.. IAMS: Iams, Eukanuba
* The animal experiments related to these companies took place prior to their acquisition by Nestlé" (taken from Bedfordfreecyclecafe.co.uk)

so I would like to try homemade.0 -
not a great choice then how its very hard to boycott today unless you do you own pet food. Before you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean !;)0

I always buy Burns petfood for my Golden Retriever. He suffered with anal gland problems and it helped enourmously. It was created by a vet and contains only natural ingredients. It doesnt work out any more expensive than any other dog food if you buy the 15kg bag. Would not use Iams if they were giving it away free and the more people who "stand up and be counted" as they say the better. Burns can be bought at some pet shops but i think it is cheaper to order online and delivery is free if you buy the 15kg bag.0

There's more info on who does and doesn't produce ethical pet food on Uncaged.
I'm another Burns fan. I have a rescued Parsons JRT - that's her in my avatar. When she first arrived, I did plenty of research (I've posted about this before so I'll try to find the link) on the food I was going to give her, and for a number of reasons, I chose Burns. She does great on it. A large (7.5kg) bag costs about £17.80 (I think) and lasts us at least three months. She has the recommended amount in two feeds (breakfast & tea), plus suitable 'leftovers' from us, mostly veg. Here's the link to Burns' Website and here's the link to Burns' Feeding Costs.

I'm a Burns fan too - I know quite a few owners who swear by Oscars as well0

you could try Oscars or Pero
introducing new food should be done gradually btw - mix it in with his usual food starting with just a 1/4 of the new food and gradually build up...0 -
My cats love Yarrah organic cat food (canned & dry) and Yarrah also make canned and dry dog food. I find zooplus has really good prices (half the cost of store prices) and free delivery for orders over £29. Also £3 off your first order. And if you order through Quidco you get another 5% off.
:AI want to move to theory. Everything works in theory.0 -
I am going to write to Tescos to ask if they could start to stock some of the products such as Burns or the Arden Grange range. I think a lot of people would change products if they could just pick them up with their weekly shop.0
