1 hour a day between 5pm and 6pm. reasoned that my washing machine and dishwasher are both cold fill, never wash up by hand if I can help it and we use an electric shower and very rarely have baths. Reasoned that 1 hr is plenty long enough to generate enough hot water for washing hands and it can always be put on for the rare occasion that we do want a bath.Seems to work out fine for us.0

We have ours on for 1 hour in the morning and then again for an hour at night (but quite often I turn it off in the evening so save fuel) We can't set ours for any less than this cos it is a quite old fashioned timer,

The important thing from an economy aspect is to have the heating on and then off before you start to use it in the morning. This ensures that you will have lower losses when water is not being used, as the water in the tank will be cooler.
It does't matter much how long you have it switched on for as the thermostat will switch of the boiler/immersion heater.
I think that people greatly overestimate the savings it is possible to make with Domestic Hot Water.
A well lagged tank loses remarkably little heat. There is a thread currently running on this matter and it appears the the lost heat from a tank will take approx 2kWh to 3kWh per day to replace.
So if you didn't use any hot water at all, and every day brought the tank back up to full heat, it would use approx 1,000kWh a year. It is difficult to price that energy as it varies with type of fuel and efficiency of boiler; but £30 -£40 a year for gas and £40 -£50 for Economy 7.
However, and this is a very important point, that heat loss from the tank is not wasted heat. It goes to heat the rest of the house - which is why most HW tanks are in an airing cupboard.0 -

Sorry, but I don't understand that bit.
Having Economy7 my immersion comes on in the early morning between 5 -6am and that's it for the day. I've reduced it from 1.5 to 1hr without noticing any difference. My tank is well lagged and it's in the airing cupboard.
Can you clarify the point above so that donuts like me can understand pls?Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!0 -

I have mine on for an hour in the morning between 6am and 7am and an hour at night between 5pm and 6pm. The temperature is set at 60 degrees“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0
