Ebid Thread

Welcome to the Ebid Thread.

Just read an article about E*bay in PCPro, it made interesting reading. For instance, it mentioned that E£ays' revenue had dropped 7% in the last quarter, also, share value has fallen 60%.
Mainly this is due to E£ay offering special 'Diamond Rates' to welcome major retailors to their site. So far, they have signed-up Argos & play.com. This of course is not good news for the E£ay shop owners.

Until now, Argos (and a few others) sold-off their catalogue returns as palletted lots via their own clearence site. Now, they sell-off these items directly through E£ay.

How does this make the commercial E£ayers feel?, pretty hacked-off, especially as the big boys are garruanted top spot in the listings.

From a sellers point of view, it makes listing items a waste of time.
From a buyers prospective, it makes finding what I am after a thankless task as I have to plough through page after page of 'Buy it Nows' to find that elusive 'real seller' who still tries to trade. Its like looking for a goldfish in a bowl of pirahnas.

I will be moving entirely to Ebid as of 1st May 2009.

Argos still sell catalogue returns in pallet lots via their own site which is run by EBay.
As a seller I haven't noticed a downturn in trade, there are still plenty of buyers on Ebay and a hell of a lot more than on Ebid, which remains a totally unviable proposition.

Not sure why you called this an 'Ebid thread' when all you did was spout negative facts about Ebay. It did remind me of the Winston Churchil quote, "There are lies, damned lies and statistics", statistics can be made to look any way you like, I'm sure someone from Ebay can make those stats you have quoted look completely different.

If you follow football, you'll one week hear that a team hasn't lost in 6 weeks shortly followed by the same team not having won in 6 weeks!

I actually think that more big sellers on Ebay will do most sellers good, there are some who will slip out of selling as a result, but a lot of smaller sellers can capitalise on it.

Why are you waiting until May 1st, if its so bad why not just transfer now?

    Which translates to

$2,181million in 2007 4th quarter to $2,036million in 2008 4th quarter, which bearing in mind the change in economy is pretty healthy.

For a better stat, try 137,000 Ebid unique visitors in the last year to 1.6million Ebay.co.uk unique visitors. http://siteanalytics.compete.com/ebay.co.uk/?metric=uv

That is more per month than Ebid get in a year!

What I know is, six months ago on Ebay I had a third of the listings, the same number of sales and more profit.

    Something's gotta give.

Apologies. I never realised that there was already a thread for 'Ebid'.
As for knocking Ebay, I was stating facts. Ebay will change back in the end. And as for only allowing people to use Paypal for on-line payments, isn't this in breach of EU regulations?. It must breach competition rules, as it stops the end-user from using competitors services such as PPPay & Google Checkout.

Ebid has seen a continuos increase in its user-base, with the number of users being a true number. in Ebays' case, people can have as many accounts as they wish (I have 2). In this case, how many actual account holders are there really?. It would be pointless asking Ebay, as they don't know the answer.

Anyway, I will continue to keep my Ebay accounts as well as my Ebid one. That way, I have the best of both worlds.

Um, I have more than one ebid account.....is that against the rules as they are both in my name and with my real address bank details etc.

Technically, 'Yes', however, you shouldn't have a problem so long as you don't use one to bid on items listed on the other.
Thats' one of Ebays' problems at the moment. With Ebay being so big, it does make the job of policing this quite hard, so the odd shill-bidding scamster is likely to escape detection for a short while. But thats just the nature of any large 'open to all' selling system, be-it an online auction site, classified ad site, or even the good old carboot sale.

In Colchester, we have a massive (500+ sellers) Car boot, and even though the organisers patrol it, you can always find some chancer flogging dodgy gear somewhere on the site.

At least with Ebid, it is small enough (for now) that shillers are soon spotted and booted-out.
