Apparantly they have not had an increase in prices (currently 2.86 Gas/11.31 Elec in my area) since April and they are in the process of reviewing their prices over the next few weeks
This company works out cheapest for myself (gas) by 18% but do i change anyway or wait to see what happens with their prices.

Your call, as oil is on it's way down, and gas is linked to oil price, and Ebico are an ethical company they may not increase prices too much, they are however now "linked" in price to Southern, so how this will pan out is any ones guess
I am with Ebico, for ease & simplicity of bills, plus I like their ethicsEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
As Ebico do not have any annual direct debit lock-ins/discounts then surely there is little risk switching (unless you are currently tied to such a 'rebate')?0

based on the ops figures, Im assuming the 11.31 on electricity is for yorkshire?
If that was the case, and you used approx 3,000 kwh on electricity per year, scottish power only costs an extra £40 per year for the electricty with the new prices rises and ebico is yet to put them up. This is also paying by cash / cheque standard tariff no standing daily charge If ebico did push up the prices, in relation to southerns rises then the electricty would become expensive for the average user, and the gas too for an average user, although you would still benefit from being a low user on the gas with ebico.
Scottish power can be called on 0800 400200.
Scottish power gas is very expensive, but the electricity is quite reasonable, again based on yorkshire and using approx 3000 kwh per year. If ebico put the price up by 25% this would work out to be £424, but with Scottish power it is only £379.
I would then have to challenge ebico's ethics, not for profit, no costs on shareholders / advertising etc... where as these other companies would be cheaper and do advertise etc...0 -
... If ebico put the price up by 25% this would work out to be £424, but with Scottish power it is only £379...
True, ... and if ebico put their prices up by 100% they'd be even less competitive.
I guess what I'm saying is why have you chosen 25%?
Of all the big 6 players, none has put their electricity prices up by as much as 25% recently. e.g. SP recently incresed theirs by just 9.4%
Using your own figures, even if ebico increased by the same amount, they would still be cheaper than SP.
At the moment, ebico have not indicated that they are increasing prices at all.

In this thread an ebico token / card user has had a 27% increase.
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1137179
I used the figure of 25% as a rough worse case scenario as Ebico refund a little by using token / card meter. Also Ebico generally follow southern's increases which increased by 19.2%.
As for scottish power, if ebico increased by 25% or even as low as 13% it would be more expensive than with scottish power. If ebico increased by 12% it would work out to be the same. So as you can see, if ebico followed southern prices rises, then ebico would be expensive, and would be better off going to scottish power.
This is based upon 3000 kwh per year electricity only, yorkshire region, payment by cash / cheque. Currently with scottish power price rise, and ebico still yet to put them up, scottish power is only £40 a year more expensive, ebico price rise would have to be very low indeed. If ebico increased by 12% then that would work out to be exactly the same as scottish power. But hold on a minute, ebico does not have share holders, advertising, not for profit, switch fees etc...and fair ethical approach to price. So there would have to be REALLY low increase, somehow I cant see it being that low.
From Kirsty's response, to keep low and competative and keep to ebico's ethical not for profit etc.., then really there needs to be no increase, theres only £40 difference currently (prior to ebico price rise) and they dont have shareholders, advertising etc.. and especially not for profit. If you chose to pay by direct debit to scottish power, then it works out to be exactly the same as current ebico prices, nevermind ebico price rise due.. Then of course the online tarriffs, even more cheaper..
I rest my case, ebico currently is competative only with the electricity, if they raise their prices, they become expensive. As it is scottish power, if you pay by direct debit, works out the same currently prior to ebico prise rise (remember scottish power have already increased), otherwise only £40 difference by cash / cheque. As for the gas, well as long as you are a low user, ebico is cheap, if you are average or more, then they are already expensive currently, again nevermind the expected / possible price increases.

We will be having a price increase in the near future our managers in discussions about the rise at the moment. We will still be competitively low.

With regards ebico having the same price rises as SSE, well that's not true. Since launch in 1999 (equigas, 2002 equipower), ebico have only changed prices twice, once in September 2006 and then in April this year. (significantly less price changes compared to SSE)
Agreed there was an announcement made in August 2007 that suggested they would 'benchmark' the price of EQUIGAS and EQUIPOWER, suggesting that they'd match the moves that Scottish and Southern Energy make to their general gas and electricity tariffs. However that has not occurred has it?
In April when SSE raised their prices by 14.2% for electricity & 15.8% for gas (source), ebico changed theirs by 14.8% for electricity and 12.2% for gas. (source)
As your post states, there has been no decision yet by ebico regarding the recent price rise by SSE effective 25 August 2008.
Although ebico have a supply partnership agreement with SSE and use SSE for customer service and billing support, ebico is a separate company and set their prices independently from SSE."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Something you should have picked up premier, is that scottish power are already the same price and cheaper AFTER scottish power increased their prices if you pay by direct debit and only £40 difference if you dont.
i.e. scottish power were initially cheaper to start with and they have profits, advertising, shareholders, swtiching incentives / fees.
but ebico dont have that, and offer an ethical fair price not for profit with none of the above listed costs.. How is that? How can ebico be cheap? considering scottish power can offer the same as ebico AFTER price rises? and ebico yet to possibly increase them more.
Even if ebico raised electricity prices by 1% !! or nothing scottish power would be cheaper than ebico if you paid by direct debit and scottish power make profits, shareholders etc..
Where does ebico's ethics / fair price / not for profit come into this?
Unfortunately premier, you cant argue with this, as I can provide the calculations to back this up.
Scottish power AFTER price increases pay by direct debit.
TIER 1 14.769 inc vat, tier 1 ceiling 900
TIER 2 09.089

Ebico current prices (PRIOR to possible increase)
11.31 inc vat
Based on average 3000 kwh, yorkshire region

Scottish Power AFTER increases pay by direct debit (discounted energy 3% off rates)
Tier 1 14.326 inc vat, ceiling 900
Tier 2 08.816 inc vat
Based on average 3000 kwh, yorkshire region
Total = £314
Scottish Power AFTER price increases pay by quarter cash / cheque
Tier 1 17.236 inc vat, ceiling 900
Tier 2 10.665 inc vat

lmao, you are only talking average use here, not high users.
Considering most households have family / kids etc.. you are talking the vast majority of the public.
I have energy saving bulbs etc.. and turn things off at the plug / switch, rather than standby etc.. and still use 3000 kwh per year, although I do have a lot of electrical stuff, but only use what i need to, the rest is completely switched off.
I can see there are some ebico fanboys, and have seen this over the year. Me personally im in the middle, not pro or against, just using logical financial common sense.
Considering credit crunch / inflation etc.. I would rather use my head to save money, rather than my !!!!0 -

I'm assuming you live on your own, Ken?It really isn't as easy as that when you have kids in the household. Not impossible, of course, but much more difficult modifying their behaviour than your/my own! I reckon if I lived alone the utility companies would be checking my house regularly to see if anyone actually lived there
