Ceiling downlighters - do they overheat?

Options
I'm having mine installed next week (plus some other electrical work) but someone at work told me today that they get REALLY hot and that you should never lay insulation or boards over them in the roof.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

Hopefully my NICE electrician already knows about this...

I've got loads, the bulbs get warm but not more so than ordinary bulbs

and you cannot put insulation over the top but like you say the electrician should know if he knows what he's doing

I have recently had a whole load of downlightlers installed in our new extension, the sparkie that fitted them gave me a really good tip, as yes they can get quite hot! Once all have been installed place a clay flower pot over each one, this apparently offers the best fire proofing available and is very cheap. Once the pots are in place then you can install insulation around them.
    Hope that helps
  • Thanks for the replies and also to to Jakster for the tip about the clay pots.

    I'll get some.

What a good idea about the flowerpots! We had downlighters fitted in the kitchen and bought some kind of special "guards" specifically made for this problem. (Electrical wholesalers had them).

i have been told that the special gaurds add an extra £25 to each downlighter being fitted......

i presume you have to empty the flower pots first..... he he

there are special fire jackets that you can install but as said previously they work out expensive if you are fitting alot of lights. clay pots was always recommended to me.

  • I also think that the rules are about to / have changed regarding downlighters and now they all must be sold with covers on top of them... They get hot all right, but not quite up to a bulb standard.

Mine's the same. Thought it might be overheating so I turned it off. Half an hour later it was fine again?
