Anybody worked for dominos?

Options
Ok, I REALLY REALLY want to get some money behind us, I hopefully have a job coming up soon at the hospital but I see that domino's want staff and I was thinking about getting DH to work for them as a driver, he already has a job but as I say I REALLY REALLY want to earn more money, I cant apply as I REALLY would get lost and nobody would get their pizza!
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!

Never worked for dominos myself but I know my local one only delivers to so many roads in the area so you might find it wasn't too bad in terms of finding your way around.

I always thought it looked like an ok thing to do if you don't mind the hours.

    Good luck!
Wandered away from the MSE track for a while but am back and on a mission! Debts cleared nearly £18k. Now to start saving ...
  • My son did this as an extra income last christmas...hes out at the moment, but I'll ask him in the morning.

My husband did this for 6 months last year and loved it. They showed him the computer system (drivers have to log the pizza off the system) and one of the drivers took him out to 'show him the ropes' but it was fun and he got on well with everyone there. At one point we got free pizzas too after a while we had to pay half shop price. The wages were minimum wage I think plus £1 for every pizza delivered (goes toward petrol) which is even better if you have two in the same area that can be delivered together. If he went further afield he would get £2 for every delivery. On top of that he got tips, sometimes nothing but often as much as £10 from one delivery!

He's pretty good at finding his way around but they had a huge map on the shop wall and drivers made sure they knew where they were going before they set off, if not, another driver was always around so they used to ask each other for directions.

I'd go for it, it was a decent earner.
  • My son said the same as Lynnie above :)

He loved it too and would go back and do it again on a short term basis if he needed extra cash.

I used to drive for Dominos...I would do it again if I was desperate for money.

The trip money (about 80p I think) rarely covered the petrol it took to make each delivery though, unless you got a double drop off. It also helps if you either know the area like the back of your hand or have TomTom to rely on as you often have to deliver to really obscure addresses, we also got 50p each time we had to make a phone call (from your own mobile) to the customer if you couldn't find the house, etc.

You did get a free pizza at the end of each shift though :D
  • i did this all the way through uni in exeter, and back at home between semesters. i thought that it was a smashing little job.

the pay back then was £4.50 ph, with £1 per drop, but that was over 3 years ago. on a busy night i'd comfortable get through 30+ deliveries over a 6 hour shift. most drops were within 1 mile too, so i'd never spend more than £6/7 on fuel (in a 1.2 renault clio) in a shift. plus, you'd average 25p tip per delivery. on top of this, the owner at the exeter branch paid for my car to be decorated in the dominos livery, and we came to an agreement for an extra 50p per drop because of this. all told, it usually worked out at £10 - £12 ph, which was a quite incredible wage for a student!

aside from the money, it was actually really fun. the employees were friendly and as people above have already mentioned, free pizza was always in the offing! i enjoy driving, which undoubtedly helps, but i also got to know my uni town and the people in it very well. many of my friends at uni were isolated to the campus, so never mixed with the locals. and when working back home during term breaks, i discovered invaluable back routes which i still use today.

even on slow nights you could get involved in making the pizza, taking calls and learning to use the in house software.

downsides- not fun on a hot summer's evening and your car smelling of pepperoni...or tuna! urgh! :rotfl:
  • I've worked as a driver for nearly three years and it's pretty straightforward - though it can be tiring after a full day at my main job.

It's min wage but as the only girly I get loads of tips esp at Christmas in my Santa hat.

They are mega flexible round my main job and I like to think hanging out with all the yoof keeps me young (I'm 29)

I never been to the area I work in before I got the job and now I know it like the back of my hand.

And I've never had any bother going round the doors late at night, just the odd bit of drunken banter - the customers, not me.

Thanks to my second job I'm heading towards a debt-free 30th birthday.

So you have all been drivers paying for your petrol? My local dominos has a fleet of mopeds, I just assumed this was how they all worked!
  • yep we pay for petrol and get a pound for delivery, which given current petrol prices would benefit from a review.
