Aldi shops - good or bad?

Options
There's an Aldi shop where I am and I went there on Friday to check it out and it seems really cheap but there's hardly any well known brands!

Should I shop there as it's cheap or should I avoid it because of the lesser known brands of foods there?

Thanks
Waddle you do eh?

With branded foods you are mainly paying for advertising. Taste tests in the press almost always show no advantage for the branded goods.

We find ALDI stuff is fine and excellent value.

Give some of the brands a try - no need to buy several months supply. I prefer some of the Aldi and Netto brands to the 'name' brands, but some haven't been to my taste. Being a bit adventurous is a good habit - saves a fortune when you travel overseas where UK brands cost 3-4 times the 'local' stuff.
  • Some of their stuff is excellent, the salt and pepper chashew nuts are yummy and really cheap, also buy alot of tortilla chips etc

Aldi's tend to pay their staff more and seem locally to have a more responsible lot. I find the Lidl's tends to look a bit like an untidy jumble sale at times but Aldi's is always reasonably tidy.
Worth signing up for their Newsletter for weekly offers by e-mail some of these are real bargains. Some of the wine is good value and I've been told their single malt whisky is also excellent.

  • I have been shopping at Aldi for the past couple of months and I am very please with the products I have tried so far. I have saved alot of money since I don't go to Asda anymore. I found because Asda had a lot more choice of food I would put them in the basket which bumped my bill up alot at the checkout. I have had quite a few food bill shocks in the past

Most of Aldi's stuff is absolutely fine. Their dried pasta is superb, not a lot cheaper than the cheaper stuff in Tesco but it's made in Italy and my Italian Chef OH says it's the best he's had in this country. They have very reasonably priced olive oil as well.

At Christmastime I love their Stollen cake.

Not very keen on their fruit and veg, some of it seems a bit tasteless.

Yes, they do, although ive never tried it with my cat, as she is a bit wierd, and only likes dry food. I intend to try some of their dry stuff with her next time I go shopping.

As for the rest of the food, some of it is actually made by really well known brands, and are imported (french heinz soup with a different label anyone??) and is really good quality, they may be cheap but its good stuff. I find their yougurts, cheese etc really great, although some people dont like the milk - but I cant taste the difference tbh. Canned stuff is good, dried stuff is good, jar stuff etc etc. I generally dont get fruit and veg there because I dont like their apples (a bit 'floury' and I like crispy) but ive never disliked anything ive had, and the bargains to be had are really worth going!

Maybe just do a small shop of a few different bits and pieces, and you will see if its worth continuing pretty quickly. Same goes for Lidl, they have some nice stuff. As an employer, yes they pay well, but I feel awfully sorry for the managers at they always seem extremely busy and work long hours. Pay makes up for that though!

I've recently started doing some of my shopping there can't get everything I want but most of their stuff is good value and tastes ok. I'm still experimenting with their stuff, most has been ok with some exceptions.

Personally, I don't think their bread is up to much and the fruit and veg can be a bit hit and miss. I recently bought some strawberries which were far better than Tesco and Sainsburys but in the same shop had some apples which looked ok but were soft in the middle.
