Ive gto two little tomato plants in tubs - they are tumbling toms - but theres no flowers or tomatoes on them yet - whats going on?? one is abotu a foot and a half high and the other slightly smalelr - they are tumbling toms but not very tumbling i must say - brought as seed so know they are - i see all these tall tomato plants on teh market with lots of tomatoes on already - i want some to start harvesting.
Ive got tomato feed too - should i boost this or will it kill them off. Ive lost most me crops - bar tomatos and spring onions as they all werent planted out early enoughadn sort of wilted and died off.
Plus can i plant anythgin at the minute?? that may grow pretty quickish??
.
Sorry sammy-kaye, I haven`t grown tomatoes since the 70`s, but these in the hanging basket are doing ok at the moment, I have some green tomatoes that are beginning to ripen. I am sure someone on here will be able to offer advice though. Good luck. The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0 -

Sammy_kaye, I've got tumbling toms. Had them last year and they were no bother, just hung at the front door and produced loads of little cherry toms, they are a small compact plant, but this year... well they're flowering plenty, but I don't think there's much sign of fruit yet, and they haven't been faring so well either. DD has put them back in the greenhouse, to see if it will help. I did my own greenhouse attending last year, but 18yo dd has been doing it for me this year, because I can't make it up to the greenhouse very often.
We did have a few strawberry plants in the greenhouse, but the fruit kept disappearing. I would see the berries from the kitchen window, but by the time dd went to get me some, there was none. She kept blaming a big snail, yeah right
we've also got a vine, it went in last year, but I'm told it does have some fruit on it, we'll wait and see if the big snail likes grapes:rotfl:Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -
Gracious me ! Fire tartan ? Corned Beef ? My poor little legs...........good job its all disappeared...........lol
Sammy - don't worry about your tomatos.........I'm sure they'll get there in the end. Ours have very small fruit on thats also very green ! And they're not really tumbling........well not yet anyway. If you pop onto Greenfingers board someone there might no a bit (well a lot) more. You can plant some carrots, they seem pretty fast to grow and you can carry on planting them.Think the same goes with lettuce but wouldn't swear to it.
So far we've been eating courgettes and ,as I said, first crop of beans yesterday..........no potatos as yet.
I wanted to plant some veg for winter but OH says we can't because by the time out tubs are empty it'll be far too late............and there was me thinking that when the beans come out in go some winter cabbage and so on................shows what I know...........unless of course he's wrong...........lol
shaz - don't like to ask about the courgette cake ..................:rotfl:
MrsMcCawber - seen piccys of your 'veg in pots' (as we call ours......lol)
and they look really good..........made me get OH to smarten our little veggie area up a bit. You have done well with all that lot...............:TMary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

My toms are producing fruit nicely now. I have four "Red Alert" plants in pots. I can't do hanging baskets as I can't reach up to water them, but I've done well with the pots for several years now.
Except 2 years ago I couldn't get "Red Alert" so I tried "Totem" instead, but they weren't anywhere near as good.
Chives do well in pots, as does mint, and parsley once you get it started off, if you're looking to try herbs. I do basil as well, but inside on the kitchen windowsill. If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -

Hi Sammy,I've got those tumbling toms too and I thought they were never going to get going ,however this weekend they got loads of flowers on them and the bees are buzzing round them quite happily.I expect yours will get flowers soon so don't worry.I started off with 14 tumbling tom plants grown from seed but all but 2 rotted away however I don't care as long as I get something from them.
I think it's been a funny old year for the garden, things don't seem to be growing to a regular pattern.Who knows it may just be the way things are going to be from now on.Sorry I can't think of anything you can plant now,I don't know if it's a bit late veg. wise but would be open to suggestion if anyone else knows of anything.0 -
Hi all
Shaz... if you get any more courgettes to use up, I posted this recipe for courgette teabread....that is stunning... i made my 1st lot into mini muffins nomnomnom
COURGETTE TEA BREAD
pre-heat oven to 180c/350f/gas 4
grease a 2lb loaf tin and bottom line with greaseproof paper - make it so it comes up the narrow edges so you can use it to lift it out- 1 large egg
- 125ml sunflower oil
- 175g courgettes -trimmed and grated (on large holes)
- 150g wholewheat flour -i used ordinary
- 1/2tsp baking powder
- 1tsp bicarb
- 1tsp ground cinnamon
- 175g soft dark brown sugar
- 75g sultanas
- 3oz walnuts chopped
- tip courgettes and all dry ingredients into a large bowl and mix well
- whisk egg into the oil and pour into dry goods
- mix to a thick batter and pour in tin
- shove in oven for about 1 hr or until a skewer comes out clean..cool in tin for 10 mins before turning out to cool
when cutting you will need a really sharp knife as its lovely n sticky and This will keep in a tin for 1 week.... or can be frozen.
i made 38 mini muffins and they took about 15 mins a batch and if you let them stand for a few seconds in the tin they firm up and are easier to remove
Have just pinched the 1st 2 tomatoes off of 1 of my plum tomato plants (grow from seeds from a tomato out of the fridge;) ) and me n hubby both reckon they are gorgeous..not all watery:T
I have plum, yellow pear, yellow brandywine, san marzano, sub arctic, Vilma and garten pearl on the go and they are all laden down with fruits.... guess i got carried awayalthough im planning on growing more varieties next year

I`ve got 3 tumbling toms in a small rectangular box and we have already eaten a few of the toms. It is laden. There are bee hives not far away and I know that a couple of the hives have been killed off by a nasty bee virus so maybe there are no fertilisers locally but SK I think your tumblers must be too happy to produce flowers. Flowers are produced in times of stress ie to propogate the next generation. Less water and no feed might do the trick0
