Buying a New Mattress - advice please?

I'm waking up every morning in incredible pain with my neck and lower back, I know I'm getting on a bit (hit 40 next month) but think we may be in the market for a new mattress.
How do I go about choosing the right one for me, we don't have megabucks to play with (probably about £300) so I definitely can't afford one of those Tempur ones.
How do I know if my problems are caused by a too hard or too soft mattress, I haven't got the faintest idea how to do this, I've only ever bought what I could afford before which was never very much.
I would really really appreciate some help, I'm in so much pain that I am snappy with the kids all the time and it's really starting to affect my life badly.

Might be worth asking your Dr, know someone who has done this before, or maybe a Physio?
Worth visiting a few shops, some will give better advice then others and then maybe finding a retailer that sells cheap mattresses rather than getting one from High St, there is a good one in Manchester, not sure where you're located.2p off is still 2p off!0 -
You can afford a mattress made from the same material as the tempur ones though...

It might be worth seeing your doctor anyway just to get a check up.

Hi,
Am i missing something. Have read the review and trying to purchase a mattress but they seem to be in the £300+ region...not £100 as stated.
Has anyone had success getting at lower price and can they send link as having trouble understanding German!Filiss0 -
http://babelfish.altavista.com/ translates blocks of up to 150 words. As for why they are dearer, perhaps the original reviewer wanted a single bed size?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20479&item=4366943720&rd=1 is currently 174 euros, (£120 ish) with 7 hours to go...

I bought one of these mattresses from the second Ebay link from Germany, I too suffer with back problems and have had no trouble with at all, my other half also said it is comfy (still does'nt stop him snoring) but at least I don't have backache when I get up.Regards
