The clock and date is now always wrong on my PC.

It is now a 5 yr old Athlon XP 1800. All else seems ok. I reset it all the time but on a boot again the next day it is wrong again!

Any idea what is wrong here?

Thanks.

    What time and date does it say?

    there is a very small internal battery in your computer, that may have ran out, although they usually last for longer than 5 years. Its a small circular battery... you can open the machine up and replace it, it will be on the motherboard.

    on the motherboard there is a battery that supplies power to the BIOS and keeps the setting. So if your clock slows down it means your battery is on the way out.

    Normally the battery is similar to a 2p coin. Be careful when you remove and replace it. I think the common size is CR2012 but your model type is printed on the battery and is easy to see.
    Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

    You can get these batteries at computer fairs for very little money but DO check the exact one you need. They are usually shiny silver and the only thing that looks like a giant hearing aid battery - :rotfl:

    Just in case you are in any doubt..:rotfl:

    You need a new cmos battery:

    Remove the old one, and take it to the shop to make sure you have the correct size and voltage.
    Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:

    you don't even need to go to a computer shop.. any shop that sells the same type of battery will do.. my dad got his replacement from the clock shop down the road.. works a treat

    You can get windows to synchronise your PC clock with an internet time server.

    - Double-click your Windows clock (in the corner of the screen) to bring up a window with the 'Date and Time Properties'.
    - Then click the 'Internet Time' tab.
    - Click here for a bit more info.

    I set my clock to automatically synchronise whenever Windows starts using Atomic Clock program (by Broderbund).
    You can download other software that does pretty much the same thing.

    good advice but won't do jack if the bios battery is on its way out.. for a couple of quid its worth changing it anyways..

    It's CR2032.
    20=20mm in diameter
    32=3.2mm in thickness
    (e.g. CR2016 is same diameter but half the thickness).

    That's in 99% of the cases. I've seen few machines which used a custom rechargeable battery, but those are less likely to fail completely after 5 years.

    *EDIT* I get mine on eBay, I think I got 5 for £1+£1 shipping. You'll be lucky if you get one at your local supermarket for this price.
