Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can help. I live in a terrace property that gets really cold. I have got the usual draught excluders etc and have just bought some plastic sheeting that sticks over single glazing to act as double. However its a bit of a pig to fit. Is it actually worth doing?
Also whats the best way of keeping the house warm. Should i leave the heating on low all day or should i turn it off in the day and only turn it on or set it to turn on for when we get home
Thanks

Yes it is worth it as I have used it in the past and it does make a difference. My husband fitted it and said he had no major problems. If having problems get some help.

check your attic insulation is up to speed ...250 mm is a recommended depth ...stop your heat going up into the roof void
Turn your boiler thermostat up in cold spells...it regulates the temp of the water in your central heating system
If single glazed, buy some heavy duty lined curtains
Keep room doors closed and wear a hat :rotfl:0 -
As I was growing up, we had these draughty old sash wondows and no central heating.
I used this cling film stuff you mentioned ......every year. It was brilliant at stopping the draughts.
If I remember back, you have to put the double sided tape around the window, put the film upto it and then use a hairdryer to heat and make the film go taught !.
1st priority is to insulate the house. Dont lose all that valuable heat through the roof. Plenty of loft insulation. If only everything in life was as reliable...AS ME !!

Another point to remeber is that boilers run most efficiently when at their hottest, so leaving the heat on low whilst you are out is not a good idea.0

I'm in one of those old terraced houses thats freezing too. I don't think I could use that clingfilm stuff as all my windows are made out of several small windows. It would take me ages.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

What about making a wooden frame to fit the window and then put the cling film stuff on to that.
As we have done that in the past as well when we wanted to put it on the windows and not have to deal with the glue on the gloss paint work.

Its a god idea but do you leave it there forever or take it down in the summer?2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Up to you. It is only suppose to last one season. Just depends if you want to open the windows or not.

I've used that clingfilm stuff in the past too and it really does make a difference. Not easy to do on your own so get someone to help. If you accidentally make a hole in it after it's up you can stick a bit of tape on it.Marsh Samphire0
