Getting cat to lose weight without going vets/Double cat household

I have 2 cats, Izzy 3 years old, not overweight, a very slender girl and then there is Spencer, my 2.5yr old, i shall call him cuddly incase he can hear me and i am worried hes just gonna get bigger and bigger!

The main issue is that he is a boy cat and i think it is common knowledge most boy cats will eat more and be bigger but as i have 2 cats to feed and Izzy likes to eat a little and go back often Spencer devours whatever she leaves and then his too.

Izzy isn't keen on sachet, she tends to lick the jelly off so i don't really bother anymore and just feed her Go Cat, she gets a few cans of Tuna a week and some chicken too.

Spencer never used to eat the Tuna but has now decided he likes that too so will often eat biscuits, sachet and tuna in 1 day!

I don't really want to take him to the vet to be told he needs to lose weight (although when he went in June nothing was mentioned), hes not huge but i don't want this to carry on and cause him health issues so just want some tips especially with people who have 2 cats where one is much greedier than the other!

    Hi

Is Spencer really fat or is he just a big cat? If you feel his ribs he's should be ok!
Only reason I ask is that vets are usually quite quick to say if they think a pet is fat.....and yours didn't.

TBH, I'd be more worried about feeding Izzie so much tuna, it should be just a very occaisional treat as it's not a very balanced diet.....I'm sorry I don't mean to be rude:o I would be inclined to cut out sachets, tuna and chicken and gradually move them both onto a better quality dry food preferably one that helps prevent male cats getting crystals in their bladder which can be a serious problem as it might be that Spencer is gorging on the tasty parts of his diet whether he is hungry or not IYSWIM.

I hope that mkes sense......I had 3hours sleep last night and I'm beginning to flag.....and my spelling has gone to pot:o

She doesn't have it every day, a few cans a week and normally only half a can as Spencer normally finds the rest, i just worry about her diet being all dry food.

Don't worry i didn't find your comment rude.

He is quite a large cat anyway, just getting a wobbly belly.

What type of dry foods would people recommend? They have Go Cat at the minute.

  • I have 2 cats, brother/sister and they're 4.

However while my male cat is bigger than his sister, i don't consider him to be fat at all. He doesn't eat much more than his sister, granted she 9 times out of 10 will walk away from the food before he does and he also eats more scraps from our dinner than she will.

Is your male cat neutered (sp?), don't know if that makes a difference, but mine is. Upon looking at mine some people might think he is fat, but once you pick him up and feel his actual body, to me its normal.

I feed mine on biscuits and morrisions own brand cans of meat with jelly, they both don't like gravy. Plus then bits of meat off our plates after dinner, but not that often.

Thats probably not much help, but gives a diff idea of someone with 2 cats.

p.s my icon is my male cat (Ronnie) looking like a rug

I've got 2 cats as well - boy and girl from the same litter and exact same issue :) They get dry food twice a day and occasionally they share a satchet of gravy cat food between them :) Extra treats (rare) include sardines in tomato sauce and cat milk - I don't give them tuna as tune in spring water seems to be super expensive and they shouldn't as far as I am aware have brine or the amount of oil there is in tuna in oil...
The boy cat (Hugin) is nearly twice the size of his sister however he's not actually fat although he does have a tendency to get fat if he's not booted outdoors regularly ;) Exercise is the key I guess :)
He's just been in at the vets today for a split claw which had to be removed under anastetic and neither the vet nor the nurses said he was fat - they all agreed he was one HUGE cat, but not infact fat... He has a nice waist and you can feel his ribs without pressing. Ofcourse if you ask him then he's being starved ;)
If you're worried then I'd ask the vet to weigh him and assess him but the warning signs are usually pretty easy to spot :) The quality of food they're on does make a difference too - both my cats and my dog are now on Arden Grange - less carp in it (James wellbeloved or Burns is good too - anything with coloured bits in is a bit like cat junkfood :) )
