Camping holidays - South West Scotland - recommendations please

I want to take the family to Scotland - we are travelling from the the South Coast so we don't want to travel to far into Scotland so heading too far North is not an option, we have a week to do the whole trip and unfortunately it's in the May half term.
I am looking for a quiet, no commercial campsite, preferably on the coast, I like rural, rugged, open natural places with quiet beaches and great views etc, lots of outside things to do.
I really don't know where to even start looking for an area, can anyone recommend an area for me so I can then start to look for sites, or if anyone knows of any sites that fit the bill?
I will go to one of the islands if there are any within reasonable reach, and as long as it's sort of empty
thanks

You wont go far wrong with the Isle of Arran. The ferry runs from Ardrossan in Ayrshire. There is plenty to do there particularly if you like the great outdoors. There used to be a very good camp site in Lochranza on the North of The Island . As kids we used to pitch tents in Glen Sannox I don't know if this still goes on!0

In hindsight I think we are now going to leave the Scotland trip until the summer as then we can go for 2 weeks and really see the place, thank you for your suggestions so far, I will keep a note of them and search out those recommendations when we go
so we are now planning to go to Cumbria as it's not too far...0 -
Have a look at https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk. They have a site search facility.0

I've already searched there but they don't give that many options - such as rural etc but cheers anyway0

Where ever you go in Scotland, dont go to St Meddans Camping and Caravan site in Troon. The site is in the middle of a housing estate and when I camped there I got a house brick through the side of my tent.Don't pay off your student loan quicker than you have to.0

I can thoroughly recommend Kippford Holiday Park near Dumfries.

It is in a rural location, close to superb beaches and is well laid out. There is lots to do in the area. Plus not too far from the Border.0 -
Yes I agree Kippford would be an ideal location. The Galloway coast is a lovely part of Scotland often missed by people who think that Scotland starts at Glasgow or Edinburgh.
You can turn left at Gretna!0
