Fairy cake stands

Options
Hi

Has anyone ever made a fairy cake stand for a birthday celebration ?! On a budget me & a friend are making about 100 fairy cakes plus one small cake for the top of the stand for a best friend. However the price to hire/buy such a stand are astronomical. So i have had the idea of buying some silver cake boards from wilkinsons or somewhere and trying to make one - however if this went wrong it would go badly wrong indeed :) so it needs to be very secure. Has anyone made one a la blue peter or should i just hire a small one (cheaper) and top the cakes up - for peace of mind !

Thanks

Lenny

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago, the cake boards I bought were 1.25 I think, the idea was to use wine/champange glasses glued between the boards to create the tiers, wasn't a brilliant success :(

I think this one from Homebase is gorgeous, obviously it wouldn't hold 100, but it's only £6.99! I spent as much on cake boards!

Unfortunately I found this one too late.

This is going to sound daft but could you not get thin cake boards, and use pva glue/paper mache on toilet rolls to strengthen them, then spray them a colour to match your cake board to make the holders for the tiers - just an idea??

Or how about gettign empty cd cases - maybe putting various pictures of you friend in them and then standing them on their edges so they make a wedge shape and stand up - if you put several they could be strong enough to hold up a tier or two
    Time to find me again

I don't think that using cardboard cake boards would work ... even if you used dowelling as supports I think that the weight of the cakes would make it very risky. Also, you'd need to be incredibly careful about people taking the cakes off - the commercial stands are made to be balanced but a home-made cardboard one wouldn't.

Do you know anyone who could perhaps make you a wooden one? Or, failing that, maybe you could buy some cheap glass cake stands from charity shops and put a couple on top of each other? I've done this before and it can look really pretty - just make sure that the stands get smaller as they go up and you don't put more than three on top of each other (two is better ...). You might need two or three of these stacks but if you get the stands cheaply (I've seen them for a few punds each) then it might work. Failing that, it might be best to hire one and top the cakes up - it might give you more peace of mind that way.

Have you had a look on ebay? I remember seeing them on there being sold by a catering supplier and just remember thinking thats really reasonable... Also, you could sell it afterwards to recoup some of your money??

    Hope this helps

    Hi !

Thank you so much for the replies - i think i will try and get a second hand one rather than make one - i'd hate for it to all go wrong. I'm going to have a look on ebay now - the pink wire one looks lovely, it's just a shame i have so many cakes to put on one !

    Thank you ever so much

For my wedding we had used a home made one and it didn't collapse. We had silver cake boards and used champagne saucers in between them.

.........saw an article in a magazine where they used up-turned tea cups as supports in-between a dinner plate (at the bottom), a supper plate, a side plate and the top one was a saucer; thereby creating a lovely stacked cake plate :)

In between they had loads of fondant fancies - all lovely sugar-almond shades; none of the crockery seemed to match but they were pastel shades so everything complimented each other.

They had 2 of these creations as the centrepiece of a table with a pretty lemon tablecloth and little streamers strewn across it.
