We are all excited about going, but from london this looks a bit secluded. On closer inspection, there seems to be one asda about 6 miles away, but any mcdonalds, kfc etc is over 12 miles away!
Can anyone recommend some good pubs, takeawys etc much closer. We have a 6 year old son, so child friendly please.
We wanted a rural hoilday, but not isolated!!! lol

can you not live without junk food ?!
there will be places to eat onsite and nearby, I am sure...
bring some of your own food / disposable BBQs etc too

Loads of takeaways on the quay in Bideford - parking is free after 6pm on the quayside. First dinner of the holiday when we go down to North Devon is fish and chips from Mr Chips near the old bridge - you can eat in or take away - we take ours and zoom over to Westward Ho!/Northam Burrows and eat them on the pebble ridge there

We stay in a holiday cottage in Buckland Brewer and usually cook at the cottage most nights - often a BBQ (even in May, and once in October, although OH drew the line at doing the turkey on the BBQ when we went down for Christmas one year
) We do occasionally eat out, sometimes in the pub in the village (but not the cheapest) and sometimes if we're over Barnstaple way we'll go to Pizza Express there with Tesco Clubcard vouchers.
Never been where you're staying, but like Rachie B said, presumably there's places to eat on site. If you do end up doing stuff like BBQs or quick easy dinners, you've already realised there's an Asda at Bideford - there's also a Morrisons a bit closer into Bideford.
And a tip from someone who has spent the last 30 years visiting North Devon - if you see a Hockings ice cream van, HAVE ONE!!!
The best ice cream ever!!! DFW no.554 - Proud to be dealing with my debts :TDAVID TENNANT CAN PROBE ME WITH HIS SONIC SCREWDRIVER ANYTIME...:AFLYING THE FLAG FOR THE CAMBRIDGE BOOTS TARTS :happyhear0 -
Bideford is lovely, we stayed in a cottage near there last year. To us the shops etc were pretty good, but then we live in mid Wales 1 hour away from Tesco and 1.5 hours away from Asda...
There are loads of fish and chip shops, child friendly pubs etc in the area. Plus there will be food available on the caravan site, I haven't stayed at that one but we go to the one in Llandudno and there is a pub on site which serves food and a fish and chip shop.
If you get chance go to Appledore, it is gorgeous and your 6 year old will love going crabbing there. Instow, which is the other side of the estuary, has a lovely beach, as does Westward Ho! Great Torrington is also a nice little town, with a lovely fish and chip shop on the main street.0 -
There is a restaurant and takeaway on site and both are reasonably priced, like the others have said there are loads of places to eat in the area, although asda is roughly 6 miles away its only a 10 minute car journey.
Our favourite chip shop is in Westward Ho! but there is also a chip shop in Woolsery, which is quite close to the site, and from what people on site have said is very good, although we have never tried it yet!0 -
We stayed there a few years ago with the children - there was a lovely pub not too far away - before you get to Bideford from Barnstaple. It was right on the road, but you went under an archway to get to the car park. Very child friendly. Just found the name of it - The Hoops Inn.0

Thanks everyone. Its not that we can't live without junk food, actually its that we never normally eat it, and it would have been a treat.
Thanks for the reccomendations, thats what i needed, it was just a bit of a surprise, after great yarmouth last time!Ok, ok, i need to go back onto Weightwatchers, lost 7 stone..... 2 back on, this has to change.....Help!!!:eek:0 -
Right, I would consider myself an expert in takeaway foods down in Bideford / Westward Ho etc etc, as I visit family in Westward Ho! about 4 or 5 times a year, and I am off down there again on Saturday!!!
Firstly Bideford - I have tried Caffecino for cakes, which is not far from the little somerfield in Bideford in a side road off the main high street.
Then Mr Ho in Bideford does a wicked chinese meal, but his prices are no cheap, and the portions are small.... but the food is very very nice.
Chicco Land in Bideford is OKayish, I have had a few things from there before, if you like greasy food and like eating crap for cheap then this is the place for you!
My favorite chinese down there though is in a little village called Northam, and its called Kingsburg. Lovely food, and they deliver for a £1 too depending on where your staying! Good prices and good portions too!!!
You must not go to North Devon without visiting Appledore and having a portion of fish and chips from Sylvesters fish shop. The fish is prepped on the premises and the batter is absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!!!!
Now, Westward Ho! This is the place I always stay, and have a fairly good knowledge of the food in the area!
The chinese ( Paramount Plus is okay, its nothing to rave about, so I wouldnt bother with this place, and stick to Kingsburg in Northam which is about 5 min drive from westward ho!
The chip shop on the front next door to the arcade fantasy island is very nice, but very expensive for what it is! This guy puts his prices up in the summer, and never brings them back down in the winter!!
The cafe ( Sandcats ) on the front is fantastic. Their breakfasts are gorgeous, and I couldnt recommend them enough!!!
I have never been to potwallopers restaurant on the front, but I have heard it is very nice although quite pricey.
The sunshine cafe is ok, nothing to shout about really!
Country Cousins is also a very very nice restaurant and the food is lovely, but again very pricey!!!
Last but not least, my favorite place in Westward Ho! - The Waterfront pub! Good food, very spacious and clean and most important show the football on the big screens. They also do a carvery on a sunday and thursday, and have a free play area for children!
Hope this has helped!!!!!0 -
oh wow, that has been a great help thanks, its a minefield when you don't know an area!
I will certainly look out for those places.
I don't suppose you know any child friendly pubs near bideford (we are actually staying in Bucks cross if that means anythig to you?)
Thanks againOk, ok, i need to go back onto Weightwatchers, lost 7 stone..... 2 back on, this has to change.....Help!!!:eek:0 -

Hmm, it would have to be the Waterfront, as I mentioned. It has a free childs play area and is about 5 mins drive from the centre of Bideford.
Here is the website for the waterfront:

If your into football, I can also recommend going to watch Bideford AFC which are opposite Morrisons. Its only a fiver to get in, and they are a pretty decent side too!!!
Also, if your looking for things to do for the kids, there is a big adventure playground called " The Big Sheep " which i think is classed as being in Abbotsham? Also there is a place called the Milky Way which isnt far from Bucks Cross, going towards Clovelly! This is another adventure playground but on a bigger scale with a mini roller coaster and birds of prey shows etc etc.
Need anymore info, just ask!0
