wanting to change the layout of bathroom

Options
im wanting to change the layout of my bathroom, but was looking for some advice on how easy my proposed changed would be...

2 images show the basic current and proposed layouts (yes they are crap and not to scale! :p)

CURRENT:

PROPOSED:

im concerned about pipes not being visible, and can see hiding the waste pipe as a problem (cant go under the floorboards as the joists go in the "wrong" direction).

Ive thought about creating some sort of false wall on the right hand wall, but wonder if thats a bit drastic!

You can get one of those concealed cisterns that you have to box in (only about 15cm deep) and that will hide the waste pipe. I just had the same thing done where I had the toilet moved and it looks so much cleaner with no pipes on show.

Anything is possible it just depends on how much you wish to spend

WC pipework would have to be boxed and tiled in or what is behind the wall where the wc is moving to?

Shower drain could be put into floor, even if the joists are running the opposite way depending in joist depths, you would need to work out load calculations and drill the joists roughly in th centre

If any boxing in of pipework is tiled to match the rest of the bathroom and then skirting put on it, it will look as if it has always been there and will not be noticable. I have a brand new house where this has been done and to be honest I don't even notice the boxing in. It is just a handy built in shelf to put things like bleach or other bathroom products on

Boxing in of the soil pipe (toilet) is about 8-10" and on the other side of my bathroom the boxing in of the waste and hot and cold feeds for the sink is about 6" - basically just enough to fit the pipes in with sufficient 'fall'. You can of course box in to a greater height if you want to make more of a feature of it or want the 'shelf' on top slightly higher.

If you are DIYing it, then just knock up a basic frame and cover with thick hardboard or plywood. You can tile straight on top of this, just make sure it is rigid enough, to avoid it flexing which could crack the tiles. The key to making it look original is to continue the skirting from the adjacent walls around the base of the boxing in

yeah that would be the plan.

if im going to be tiling over the boxing in would it be best to use plasterboard for it? ive already saved some skirting board from elsewhere in the house so that will match in nicely

the other option is a waste height false wall so i can install a concealed cistern job, could do something similar the other side for a similar style sink
  • Plasterboard should work fine. For reasons best known to the builders of our house*, the toilet soil pipe is on the inside of the house and runs down into the kitchen. So we've just blocked it off with plasterboard and the plasterer's coming in to skim over the top.

*Fifties ex-council house. It's a running theme in all the houses of this size round here...

Yes you could use plasterboard just as well, It was just that I used plywood in mine, but either would be OK.

My current bathroom has a false wall about 8 inches higher than the sink behind the loo and sink (sink is on same side as loo) and I must admit, with a mirror above it, it looks the biz and is great for artfully displaying all your usual bathroom bits and bobs on rather than cramming them all onto the back of your sink or on one of them tiny little glass bathroom shelves you can get.

I have a normal loo, and if you have the room, I would stick with that, as with a concealed cistern you then have to go to all the palaver of putting a hinged lid into the top of the false wall to gain access to the cistern in case of breakdowns, leaks etc. Unless you have a particularly tiny bathroom using a normal loo should be doable as you are only 'losing' about 6" of floor space which you won't notice, because at head height you haven't lost any width to the room

very good point about access to the concealed cistern, probs more hassle than its worth!

i quite like the idea of the false wall just above sink height, i would have enough room to do that either side without the need for a concealed cistern, so that might be the way to go.

there is a window which runs to 2 inches from the right hand wall, so the idea of a complete false wall down one side is out the window (excuse the pun). i'll have to check how high that window is from the ground, but it could work well with mid-height false walls. i suppose i could even build some glass shelving or a cupbard into this if i wanted
